This Week’s Gonzo – the Vaccines and Ellie Goulding have a visit with Alexa

By on Friday, 11th March 2011 at 1:00 pm

So what’s on MTV Gonzo tonight? The Vaccines, the band you either like or cannot escape from, will be stopping by for a chat with Alexa. Also on the show will be Ellie Goulding, who will not only be talking with Alexa but will also perform a cover of Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl in the World’ (I didn’t see that one coming). American rapper Lupe Fiasco will no doubt be talking about his new Modest Mouse-sampling tune ‘The Show Goes On’ and will be fielding questions from the Gonzola.

Through the wonders of technology, Midwest alt-rock band Cage the Elephant will be filling us in what they’ve been up to since the release of their second album, ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday’, in January. In the weekly Director’s Cut feature, North London rapper Skepta walks us through his video for ‘Amnesia’. I guess it should go without saying that rappers tend to name-drop. Well, at least Skepta isn’t shy to do so, revealing, “Diddy invited me back to party at a pool with loads of girls and champagne!” If we were so lucky. New videos from the Strokes and Dr. Dre featuring Eminem round out the programme. It’s a good night to stay in.

MTV Gonzo airs tonight (Friday) at 7 PM on MTV Music, with a repeat at 8 PM on MTV Rocks.

This Week’s Gonzo – Alexa is joined by Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance and Hurts

By on Friday, 4th March 2011 at 11:00 am

On this week’s edition of MTV Gonzo, two heavy hitters of the American rock scene, Good Charlotte and My Chemical Romance, both come by for a chat with Alexa. Also stopping in to the brown couch are band of the moment Hurts to talk about their recent successes. When asked about his immaculate hair, Hurts’ Theo Hutchcraft answered, “my hair is made of Lego – I click it off at night otherwise it spins around”. Haha.

What else is on Friday’s show? MTV Brand New for 2011 winners Mona provide a bluffer’s guide, and new music from Plan B and Radiohead gets a spin. It all happens tonight on MTV Gonzo.

MTV Gonzo airs tonight (Friday) at 7 PM on MTV Music, with a repeat at 8 PM on MTV Rocks.

Series 2 of MTV’s Gonzo to Premiere Friday Night (25 February)

By on Thursday, 24th February 2011 at 11:00 am

Following on from the success of the first series, Alexa Chung returns tomorrow night as the host of series 2 of MTV’s Gonzo. Alexa has called this show “her dream job”, and who wouldn’t, really? On each episode, she’ll be revealing her ‘Top 3’ things rocking her world that week – anything from brand new bands, gadgets, books, films, whatever cool stuff that’s on her mind. And every week she gets to meet a load of exciting music and popular culture personalities and gets to ask them the kinds of questions you won’t ever hear on any other chat shows. Of course, the success of Gonzo rests in your hands, as a centrepiece of these unusual q&a sessions is the Gonzola, a tombula filled full of questions from people like you. These personalities also get to weigh in and stump for their favourite new and emerging talent; for example, in the last series Bloc Party frontman-gone-solo Kele did just that.

But wait. A music show wouldn’t be a music show with live performances, and Gonzo will continue to showcase up and coming talent performing stripped down, acoustic versions. In addition to these exclusive to Gonzo performances, a Video of the Week, plucked straight from the MTV playlist, as well as a Director’s Cut feature allowing bands to walk us through their latest visual creations will be on every episode of Gonzo.

We’ve been told that the famed Gonzo sofa has been “slightly soiled” and to ‘blame Mark Ronson” – not going to touch that one. But we will venture that pants wetting may occur when you consider the guests that have already been confirmed for this second season of Gonzo: the recently returned Foo Fighters, Jessie J, Good Charlotte, Beady Eye, My Chemical Romance and comedian Russell Howard. Quite exciting.

Catch the first ep of series 2 tomorrow night (Friday) at 7 PM on MTV Music, with a repeat at 8 PM on MTV Rocks.

MTV Launches New Television Channel, MTV Music

By on Tuesday, 1st February 2011 at 11:00 am

MTV launches a brand new television channel today, “solely focused on JUST music. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” Sounds good to me! Called MTV Music, the new station will feature the latest music videos, live performances, intimate acoustic sessions, behind-the-scenes specials and exclusive A-list interviews.

For its first week of programming, there are already some pretty exciting programmes lined up. Tonight (1st of February), Jessie J‘s performance from last week’s MTV Brand New in 2011 show at London’s Koko will be broadcast at 9 PM on the show ‘MTV Live’. The programme with exclusive footage will include her single ‘Do It Like A Dude’ and more. At 9:30 PM, ‘Bruno Mars: mtv.co.uk Live Session’ featuring the American r&b star will premiere. At 10 PM, ‘Nicky Minaj: My Time is Now’ offers an exclusive insider’s look into the ‘Your Love’ star’s professional and personal life, from travelling to her native Trinidad to her performance at the MTV VMAs and includes exclusive interviews.

On Friday (4th of February), comedian / actor / DJ Mathew Horne hosts his ultimate countdown of Top 50 BRIT award winners at 8 PM. If you’re still up in the wee hours of Friday night into Saturday morning, MTV Music has ‘Kings of Leon Worldstage’, following the Nashville stadium rockers (pictured above) on tour in Hamburg, Germany. Of course, there’ll be live concert footage. (The programme repeats on Sunday 6 February at 10 PM.) And on Sunday, the 6th of February at 9 PM, is the premiere of ‘On Set with Nicole Scherzinger‘, where the Pussycat Dolls singer invites viewers to Los Angeles to get an inside glimpse of the making of the video for her second solo single, ‘Don’t Hold Your Breath’.

WIN / Tix for MTV Brand New for 2011 Gigs

By on Monday, 17th January 2011 at 11:00 am

The Blackberry Presents MTV Brand New for 2011 gigs will be taking place at London’s Koko on the Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th of January. Tuesday night will see rising stars Jessie J (winner of BBC Sound of 2011) and Ruff Diamondz supporting Tinchy Stryder (of ‘Take Me Back’ fame), while Wednesday will feature our 10 for 2011 poll winner Mona and Clare Maguire opening for drum and bass duo Chase and Status. And thanks to our mates at MTV, we have a pair each for both gigs to give away.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets to one of the two gigs, start by entering your name and email address (so we can contact you if you’ve won) and choosing which gig you’d like to win tickets for. Then we’re making this super easy for you. Tell us why you deserve to win. The best two answers as chosen by us will get them. Easy peasy, yes? This competition is now closed. The winners will be contacted shortly by email.

Vote in MTV’s Brand New for 2011 Poll

By on Friday, 7th January 2011 at 5:30 pm

So the folks over at MTV are running a poll through the 31st of January 2011 to find their brightest musical star of 2011. Cast your vote below and you will also have the chance to enter a contest for a pair of tickets to the MTV London gigs on the 25th and 26th of January when some of the acts will be performing. The winners will also get a 2-night stay at the K West Hotel and Spa in London Town, which looks by all appearances to be an amazing place to lay your head after a night of brilliant performances by some of music’s best up-and-coming acts.

To see a comparison of TGTF’s 10 for 2011 acts as voted by you and the BBC Sound of 2011, go here. (And in case you have been living under a rock and were not listening to Radio1 this week, the BBC Sound of 2011 artists as announced by Zane Lowe are #5 – Clare Maguire, #4 – Jamie Woon, #3 – the Vaccines, #2 – James Blake, and #1 – Jessie J.)
