(Holiday!) Video of the Moment #2243: She & Him

By on Wednesday, 14th December 2016 at 10:00 am

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, known collectively as alt-pop duo She & Him, started preparing early for this year’s Christmas season. They released a new holiday-themed album called ‘Christmas Party’ way back at the end of October, before the traditional trick-or-treat festivities had even come to a close. However, I suspect you might forgive their mild over-enthusiasm for the Christmas season when you see the album’s adorable first video release.

‘Winter Wonderland’ is the second single from ‘Christmas Party’, following ‘Happy Holiday’, and it finds Deschanel and Ward once again in blissfully perfect harmony. Ward’s simple, classic acoustic guitar and pedal steel arrangement of the song leaves plenty of room for Deschanel’s vocals—enough room, in fact, for rocker Jenny Lewis to join the cozy mix. But rather than featuring the three musicians, the song’s promo video stars an irresistible group of festively fashionable pugs. Even if you’re not a dog lover, this combination of aural and visual confectionery, directed by Pupstar Sonoma, is sure to put you in a holiday frame of mind.

She & Him’s 2016 holiday album ‘Christmas Party’ is out now on Columbia Records. TGTF’s previous coverage of She & Him is back here.

Video of the Moment #1214: She and Him

She and Him, aka twee duetting duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), have a new video out for ‘I Could Have Been Your Girl’. With its cheesy dance routines, it reeks of ’60s films like Grease and of that ilk, but since it’s Zooey, we’re ok with that. Watch it below. The song is available from their current album ‘Volume 3’, available now.

Holiday wishes to all + (Holiday!) Video of the Moment #1078: She and Him

In an appropriately seasonal offering, She and Him (the duetting duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Deschanel revisits her Elf film turn singing ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ not with Will Ferrell but her usual partner instead in this cutesy cartoon.

Happy holidays to you who is reading this post: we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. This year we’ve been honoured to cover SXSW, the Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Evolution Festival, Guernsey Festival, Standon Calling, Reading Festival, Jersey Live, Beacons Festival, Split Festival and even the 26th ARIAs (in Sydney!) And we hope to bring you even more great content next year, and of course the usual album, single and live reviews, new and freely available mp3s and brand spanking new videos you’ve come to expect from us.

Thank you to each and everyone of you who’s read what we had to say on the current state of music; all the hard-working bands that we can’t show our appreciation enough for but that we hope will continue to be successful; those bands to have gone out of their way to help and not hinder our attempts to bring you the best and brightest of new music; and of course everyone behind the bands and venues who aren’t given enough credit for what they do in our industry. We salute you all and hope you have a wonderful holiday, get exactly what you wanted this Christmas and have a fabulous, success-filled 2013! See you in the New Year!

In the Post #81: She and Him – The Christmas Waltz

By on Friday, 14th October 2011 at 12:00 pm

We’re already collecting band names for the 10 for 2012 poll. (Vote here.) But in case you weren’t sure we were getting closer to the end of 2011, here’s something else: news of She and Him‘s ‘A Very She and Him Christmas’ album. If you have ever seen the film ‘Elf’, you will recall Zooey Deschanel’s beautiful a capella version of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ that bounces off the bathroom tiles. Thankfully, the song is one of the 12 tracks on the third album from Deschanel and her partner in crime M. Ward.

But let’s turn our attention to the album’s first teaser and opening track, ‘The Christmas Waltz’. Like the previously described Elf one-off performance, this song takes advantage of Deschanel’s clear, controlled voice and pairs it simply with spare guitar and a few notes on the piano that come in later. When you’ve got talent like that, that’s all you need, really. (How is it possible that one woman can be such a good actress and can sing well? So not fair.)

As a rule, I don’t like Christmas songs: I think they’re too sentimental and cheesy. But if you’ve got to have someone serenading you to get you in the holiday mood, I can’t imagine anyone better than Zooey Deschanel to do the honours. (I’m also guessing that if you preorder this album for your girlfriend, you’ll probably get some kind of “present” later on in the holiday season. Just saying…)

7.5/10

‘A Very She and Him Christmas’ will be released on the 31st of October on Domino. You can preorder yours from Domino here.
