Interview: Prides chat with Original Penguin on how the ’80s influenced their music

By on Friday, 6th November 2015 at 4:30 pm

Glaswegian electropop band Prides have been busy bees this year, having released their debut album ‘The Way Back Up’ on Island Records back in July. (Read my review of the LP here.) They’re also currently in the midst of a massive autumn UK and Irish tour to support their debut release; the tour runs through until Thursday the 26th of November in Belfast (my birthday, in case anyone wants to get me anything).

As part of their #PluggedIn60 campaign and as they queried bands including Flyte before them, Prides were asked this summer, after supporting Lucy Rose on the road, about the importance of the electro, hair band-filled ’80s has had on their music. Watch it below.

Interview: Flyte chat to Original Penguin on how the ’60s influenced their music

As part of their #PluggedIn60 campaign, fashion house Original Penguin interviewed Flyte to ask them what decade of popular music has proven to be most influential to their songwriting and their style of music. Filmed by the sea, Will Taylor (lead vocals, guitar), Sam Berridge (guitar / keyboards / backing vocals), Nick Hill (bass / backing vocals) and Jon Supran (drums / backing vocals) chat about the Beatles, Paul Simon and currently active bands like Tame Impala who share a similar approach. Watch the clip below.

The band’s last release was back in December 2014; the ‘Diamond White’ EP is available only on vinyl. Past coverage on indie pop group Flyte on TGTF is this way.

WIN / Tix to Original Penguin Plugged In session December 2014 in London starring Wild Smiles and Citizens

By on Wednesday, 3rd December 2014 at 11:00 am

Ah yes, it is really December. But before your heart gets too cold, those hip folks over at fashion house Original Penguin are putting on another one of their amazing Plugged In sessions at the famed London venue the Hospital Club on the 10th of this month. As we did for the show in June starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS, July’s with Twin Atlantic and We Are Scientists and the one in October featuring Peace and Tigercub, we’re very happy to have a pair of tickets to give away to this month’s event.

The December Original Penguin show will star Southampton’s Wild Smiles and London band Citizens. Whether you’re just up for a gig or planning on gifting these to your beloved as an early Christmas present (and you can never be too early, am I right?), you can enter our lucky draw below. Normally the only way into these special Original Penguin shows is if you sign up here on their Web site to put your name in for the company’s lucky draw. But as I mentioned before, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away and we want to give them to a deserving TGTF reader.

In the form below, please fill out your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you really want to see this show (and also to confirm you’re not a robot!), you’ll need to correctly answer this question: What’s the name of Wild Smiles’ debut album released this year? Get your entries in by noon British time on this Friday, the 5th of December. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received and contact him/her by email. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only who can get themselves to London for the show, and the winner and guest must be 18+ or you will be turned away at the door (and we wouldn’t want anyone to be disappointed). All duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed. The winner will be contacted by email.

If you recall back in the summer (yes it was a long time ago now!), we gave away tickets to an Original Penguin Plugged in session starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS at the Hospital Club in London. We’ve got a live gig video from the June night of the alt-pop THUMPERS performing their song ‘Galore’, which you can enjoy below.

The band recently concluded their support slot with Klaxons, playing a massive show at London Shepherd’s Bush Empire this past Sunday night.

Live Gig Video: We Are Scientists play ‘Make It Easy’ at Original Penguin Plugged In session in London

Back in July, the Hospital Club in London played host to a brilliant Original Penguin Plugged In night starring American duo We Are Scientists and Scots Twin Atlantic. (Two lucky TGTF readers attended the show via us.) This afternoon we’ve got a live video from the night of We Are Scientists performing ‘Make It Easy’ from the night for you.

The song appears on We Are Scientists‘ fifth album ‘TV En Français’, released back in March. Watch the performance below. To watch Twin Atlantic performing ‘Brothers and Sisters’ on the same night, head this way.

WIN / Tix to Original Penguin Plugged In session October 2014 in London starring Peace and Tigercub

By on Tuesday, 23rd September 2014 at 11:00 am

October is just on our doorstep, isn’t it? And with another month comes another fab show courtesy of fashion house Original Penguin, who are putting on another one of their Plugged In sessions at the famed London venue the Hospital Club on the 2nd of October. As we did for the show in June starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS and the one in July with Twin Atlantic and We Are Scientists, October’s promises to be a doozy. And yet again, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky TGTF reader! Who’s playing, you ask?

Peace rocked everyone’s world in 2013 with their debut album ‘In Love’. They’ve been working on their follow-up to their best-selling debut, so this will be an incredible chance to see the four-piece not in a massive festival setting but in much more intimate digs.

And if Peace weren’t enough for you, Tigercub from Brighton will also be playing on the night. Described by many as what Nirvana and Sonic Youth might have sounded if they were slightly more pop, they are sure to remind you of the ’90s (if you were alive back then anyway) and will be sure to get toes tapping.

Now, usually the only way into these special shows is if you sign up here at Original Penguin to put your name in for the company’s lucky draw. But as I mentioned before, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away and we want to give them to a deserving TGTF reader. Keen on winning? Of course you are. Here’s all the details to enter…

In the form below, please fill out your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you really want to see this show (and also to confirm you’re not a robot!), you’ll need to correctly answer this question: What’s the name of Peace’s next single, out on the 28th of September? Get your entries in by noon British time on Thursday the 25th of September.

This contest is now closed and the winner has been contacted by email.
