Sheffield band High Hazels have just released their debut self-titled album, which includes singles ‘Banging on My Door’ and ‘Misbehave’, this past Monday on Heist or Hit Records. In case you haven’t been following their story so far on TGTF or haven’t bought your copy yet and still want a taster of the LP, here’s your chance.

The band are offering up a free download of the dreamy album closer ‘The Promenade’. Listen to the track below and if you like it, click the big button and get the mp3 in exchange for your email address.

Catch the band live starting next week in the UK.

MP3 of the Day #859: Fenech-Soler

By on Monday, 27th October 2014 at 10:00 am

Hmm. I would like to think it was I who gave electropop stalwarts Fenech-Soler *the* nudge in the right direction, prompting them to record this cover of Prince’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’. When I chatted with them in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in April before their Glasslands show there, we talked about the possibility of them recording a cover, and I joked to them their benchmark was Glass Animals‘ peerless cover of Kanye West’s ‘Love Lockdown’. This is a suitable, sexy rival.

MP3(s) of the Day #858 (and more!): Rome Fortune

By on Friday, 10th October 2014 at 10:00 am

Atlanta rapper Rome Fortune just finished up a support slot opening for Glass Animals on their massive autumn tour of North America. I’m generally not a huge fan of straight rap, but there was just something about Fortune’s opening performance at the Black Cat in Washington DC on 17 September that I found very honest. Not to mention he’s quite catchy with his rhyme and got everyone’s hands in the air too!

Guess they’re all pals now, as Dave Bayley reworked their new buddy Rome into a new version of their upcoming single ‘Hazey’, which drops next Monday, the 13th of October, on Wolf Tone / Caroline International. (We previously posted the promo and live from London Meltdown Festival versions of the single on TGTF.) So for today’s MP3(s) of the Day (and more!) post, we’re streaming below that rework, along with the entire ‘Small VVorld’ album from Rome Fortune that premiered on Billboard on Tuesday, which Fortune is offering up entirely for free. Have a listen to both and if you fancy grabbing the album for your very own, you can do so through this link.

Bands to Watch #307: Hudson Taylor

By on Thursday, 9th October 2014 at 12:00 pm

Irish singer/songwriter duo Hudson Taylor, comprised of brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson-Taylor, have slowly but surely gained a steady following of fans with their energetic, heavily harmonic brand of folk pop, inspired by classic folk rock acts like Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills and Nash. They officially declared themselves a band in 2011 and have since released 3 EPs (‘Battles’ and ‘Cinematic Lifestyles’ in 2012 and ‘Osea’ in 2013), as well as touring in support of Kodaline and Jake Bugg.

Hudson Taylor’s latest single ‘Chasing Rubies’ is due for release via Polydor Records on the 19th of October, just as they are finishing another round of support shows with Bugg. Like their previous songs, ‘Chasing Rubies’ is an energetic, lovelorn track featuring infectiously singable melodies and the type of seamlessly blended vocal harmonies that are best achieved by finely tuned sibling voices (think of Swedish duo First Aid Kit or fellow Dublin-based sister act Heathers).

The brothers show the full depth of their songwriting skill with the darkly dramatic ‘Battles’, a stomping Mumford-esque track about competing for a lover’s affection. In the accompanying video, featured below, they temper their fiery, vengeful lyrics, “I will lift her love and I’ll break your spirit / I will dig a hole and I’ll throw you in it” with imagery of colorfully costumed children playing battle in the woods. The children’s wide-eyed innocence contrasts sharply with the final line in the song’s chorus, “only time will tell if we’re all just cynics on the run / if we’re all just cynics come undone”.

Hudson Taylor are currently working toward a full LP release tentatively planned for early 2015. You can listen to a full playlist of their music on their YouTube channel, or sign up to their e-mail list to receive a free download of their jaunty acoustic track ‘Strangers’. Better yet, catch them live on their just announced headline UK tour scheduled for February 2015.

MP3 of the Day #857: Glass Animals

By on Tuesday, 7th October 2014 at 10:00 am

The latest remix of Glass Animals‘ ‘Gooey’ is a unique one. Harlem-based producer Mike Slott‘s background is rooted in jazz and classical music, which seems like a total mismatch to Glass Animals’ oozy, woozy psychedelic groove style.

You’ll be surprised though with Slott’s treatment, as it’s so different from all the other remixes you’d have already heard on the ‘Gooey’ EP: instead of throwing everything at it and adding a massive number of layers on top of the original, Slott chose to go minimalist, it’s almost ghostly in its New Age-dness. Listen to and download it for free below.

MP3 of the Day #856: The Kin

By on Monday, 6th October 2014 at 10:00 am

Aussie band and gleeful ‘robbers’ The Kin will be touring Oz later this month to continue their Thick as Thieves tour, then will continue on with dates in America in November. Because they’re such nice blokes, they’re giving away their track ‘So Emotional’ for free. Grab it by clicking on the download link on this page, which also lists all their live dates through to the end of 2014.
