Live Gig Videos: Blossoms perform ‘Honey Sweet’ and cover 50 Cent and Wham! in the Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Thursday, 16th February 2017 at 4:00 pm

It’s good to be Stockport, Greater Manchester group Blossoms. The band have been nominated for the British Breakthrough Act at this year’s BRITs, and there’s still time to get your vote in for them (or whichever of the nominees you prefer) through here (UK residents only) before next week’s awards show. As a part of a special week at the Radio 1’s Live Lounge, as the radio station is celebrating the BRITs, they invited Blossoms in yesterday as award nominees in to play a song of their own, plus as is standard for all their Live Lounge performances, a cover.

Choosing to do a cover of 50 Cent’s ‘In Da Club’ mashed up with Wham!’s ‘Careless Whisper’ has been controversial for their fans (if you question this, just read the comments section here from their Facebook), but what is not at all controversial is their performance of ‘Honey Sweet’, featured on their self-titled album released last summer. Watch both performances below; you can listen to the Radio 1 programme for the next 28 days via Radio 1’s Web site. ‘Blossoms’ is out now on Virgin EMI, and my review of the LP is through here. I’ve written a fair bit on the North West band here on TGTF, and you can catch up on all our past coverage on them if you head this way.

Live Gig Video: Lucy Rose covers Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Bad Blood’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Tuesday, 14th July 2015 at 4:00 pm

Just last week, Lucy Rose released her much anticipated sophomore album ‘Work It Out’; read Carrie’s thoughts on the LP here. Naturally, she recently made an appearance on Radio 1 to talk up the album, and as is de rigueur for all artists doing so through the station, she was tasked to perform a cover of a current popular song. Along with a full band, Rose chose to perform Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Bad Blood’. From the outset, I was wondering how’d this turn out, but it actually turned out pretty good! Watch the performance below.

Lucy Rose will tour the UK and Ireland in October and November 2015. For all thing Lucy Rose on TGTF, right this way.

Live Gig Video: Everything Everything cover Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Heartbeat Song’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Thursday, 18th June 2015 at 4:00 pm

Everything Everything will be releasing their hotly anticipated third album ‘Get to Heaven’ next Monday. Ahead of that, they appeared in the Radio 1 Live Lounge to perform for presenter Clara Amfo. For their obligatory live cover, they decided to take the recent Kelly Clarkson megahit ‘Heartbeat Song’. Okay, so this sounds really strange to me with a male falsetto voice leading it, but there’s definitely a smooth jam feel to it, which makes it a quite unique treatment. Watch it below.

Everything (no pun intended) Everything Everything related we’ve got on TGTF is this way. ‘Get to Heaven’ will be released on the 22nd of June on Sony; catch the band on tour in the UK in November.

(SXSW 2015 flavoured!) Live Gig Video: James Bay covers Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s ‘FourFiveSeconds’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Friday, 6th March 2015 at 4:00 pm

Hat-wearing, guitar-toting singer/songwriter James Bay stopped by Radio 1’s famous Live Lounge recently. As per tradition, he had to choose a recent song to cover, and he chose Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney‘s ‘FourFiveSeconds’. As you can probably imagine, it’s a bit strange to watch as this isn’t really isn’t Bay’s usual genre. Watch him and his band knock it out for Fearne Cotton below.

Check out all our past coverage on James Bay here, including info on his UK tour next month. He’ll be playing a series of high-profile shows in Austin at SXSW 2015 in 2 weeks.

Live Gig Video: The 1975 cover One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ in Radio1 Live Lounge

By on Thursday, 5th September 2013 at 4:00 pm

Just when you though the Radio1 Live Lounge couldn’t get any weirder than Biffy Clyro going in there and covering Vampire Weekend’s ‘Diane Young’, The 1975 come round with this surprising gem that is slower and slowful. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Your ears are not deceiving you. The Mancunian band is actually covering One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. Even more hilarious, frontman Matty Healy introduces the clip, looking a little confused and saying, “I don’t know where the rest of them are…” and pointing to a virtual sign. I’mn also wondering where those glasses went that are in the still on the YouTube video…

Read my review of the band’s self-titled debut album on Dirty Hit here; it was just released on Monday.
