Live Gig Video: Kasabian performs ‘Days are Forgotten’ at NYC’s Terminal 5

“The cold, unfeeling warehouse” (seriously, that’s the description a mate once gave me of it), better known as New York City’s Terminal 5 venue, recently played host to Kasabian. The nice people of The Bowery Presents, who put on most of the more prominent gigs in the city, are sharing this video of the band playing ‘Days are Forgotten’ there on the 22nd of March.

Preview: Reading and Leeds 2012

Editor’s note: John’s written about this from the viewpoint of Reading, but I’m sure if you’re reading this, chances are you know how the rotating band schedule of Reading/Leeds weekend works. If not, comment here and we’ll explain. Cheers.

Dave Grohl first unleashed his ferocious talent on an unwitting Reading Festival audience in 1991. Now 21 years later he is back, AGAIN, to close the Reading Festival on the 26th of August with arguably the biggest and best rock band of this generation, Foo Fighters (pictured above). Joining these already battle hardened festival veterans are relative newcomers to the headlining rounds Kasabian, who with the release of the extremely pleasing ‘Velociraptor’ (review here) are sure to bring a massive crowd to the main stage, even if they are fighting it out with post-hardcore heavyweights At the Drive In for a share of the crowd. I, for one, am torn in this instance but a first time headlining slot at Reading for Kasabian is just sounding a little too tasty to miss.

Filling the final headlining slot on this bill was never going to be an easy feat, so it had to go to a band of hugely talented legends, which go by the name the Cure. You’d be hard pressed to find a band on the roster for the weekend that doesn’t cite Robert Smith’s band of heroes as their influences. However, if these veterans of the stage don’t exactly float ya boat then take a look at the NME stage, where the Maccabees will surely produce a set to remember in the tent.

As with every year at Reading Festival though the fun is by no means over with just the headliners. Over the weekend the hallowed Richfield Avenue site will be graced by acts including the massively popular Florence and the Machine, who’ll be looking to ‘Shake It Up’ in the south warming up for Kasabian. The unenviable task has of opening for the Cure falls to that ginger haired beauty Hayley Williams and her pop punk band of miscreants Paramore. Joining Foo Fighters on the final day are the Black Keys, who after a UK tour will be fired up and ready to rock the Main Stage’s socks off.

However, if you thought those boys at Festival Republic were spoiling you already, just wait until you see the host of other bands announced. ‘I Predict a Riot’ on the Sunday with Kaiser Chiefs and for those of you wanting that guilty pleasure look no further than Welsh metallers Bullet For My Valentine on the Main Stage. For nostalgia’s sake, Coheed and Cambria are being welcomed back to Reading for some proggy goodness. If you want to stay current, check out Main Stage slots for Bombay Bicycle Club, the Vaccines and Reading (and The Boss) favourites the Gaslight Anthem.

The surface has hardly been scratched here, with the Lock Up Stage, the Festival Republic Stage and the rest of the NME Stage yet to be announced. Undoubtedly though, this promises to be the festival event of the summer and with weekend tickets still available, my question is, will I see you in the mosh pit?

Live Review: Kasabian with Hacienda at 9:30 Club, Washington DC – 20th March 2012

After 6 long years, Kasabian finally graced our American shores with a tour. There were many a fan who were not going to miss this show. Having played mostly support slots in America and never in Washington DC, Kasabian had big promises to keep for the waiting crowd.

Support was provided by San Antonio, Texas band Hacienda. Vocals were shared by Dante Schwebel (guitar) and Rene Villanueva (bass) and were perfectly lovely, although nothing to write home about. Their best of their set was ‘Savage’ a dreamy, synth driven new song set to be released on their upcoming third album.

The main event, however, was Kasabian. From the wailing opening of ‘Days are Forgotten’, Leicester rockers Kasabian had Washington punters in the palm of their hands. My town, often saddled with a rather staid reputation, is not known for its overexuberance at shows. And unluckily it was a Tuesday – “meatloaf night” for many a Washington pundit. But we did the town proud by bringing it for Kasabian that night! Famed Club 9:30 had the roof blown off it by both the band and the crowd. The sold-out crowd welcomed the manic rockers with fists raised, voices loud and feet leaving the ground over and over. The floor was an undulating mass all the way back to the doors the entire night. We even had a stage diver (an act that gets you tossed from this particular club!): so enthusiastic was this crowd.

Frontman Tom Meighan commanded the fairly small stage with his larger than life personality that easily translates into venues 10 or 15 times larger than the one he was owning last week, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Axe man Serge Pizzorno played to the crowd over and over, stalking the stage with his guitar and coming out in front of the monitors to engage the crowd. Ever the showman, Pizzorno preened like a rooster, strutting, dancing, throwing poses, all angles and long limbs, and letting loose with killer riffs. The light show was even something we often don’t get in a club this size. But that is our reward for not getting to see bands the likes of Kasabian for years and years – kick-arse shows in smaller clubs than in England and Europe.

Among the highlights for me were when ‘Thick as Thieves’ growled to a close by segueing into a cover of the Doors’ ‘People Are Strange’. Then safely ensconced at the barrier, I was able to withstand the surging crowd as Pizzorno egged the masses to mosh directly behind me during his featured song ‘Take Aim’. ‘Rewired’, a favorite of mine of the new album ‘Velociraptor’, was indeed electric, all throbbing and innuendo. And of course the entire night was worth it even if you *just* saw the encore. ‘Switchblade Smiles’ absolutely exploded off the stage. Though not a chatty band, their appreciation of the crowd was apparent by their frequent clapping and bowing out to the audience. All night, they seemed genuinely grateful that so many present were so enthusiastic.

Kasabian have been selling out venues left and right throughout the U.S. Sure, it might have something to do with the fact that we didn’t see them at all for 2009’s ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’, but I think it has more to do with their reputation for a killer live show. If you had the chance to watch their New Year’s Eve show online, there was no way you’d miss them on their run through the States. Yes, nearly everyone I talked to at the show asked me whether or not I was going to either Noel’s or Liam’s upcoming local gigs – but I resist the comparison. I love Kasabian for themselves, what their music does to me, and how I and all the others reacted to the show. Judging by this night – Kasabian would be able to come back to DC any time to an ecstatic “welcome back!”

Album Review: Kasabian – Velociraptor!

Kasabian‘s ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ was an album of simply epic proportions. One which critics (myself included) ate up, one which the ravenous for hook public adored and one which cemented them thoroughly at the centre of British mainstream rock ‘n’ roll. The next album ‘Velociraptor!’ then was always going to be a challenge, a challenge which by the evidence I have heard they have taken up beaten and then just for good measure beaten again.

This album though is a thoroughly different beast to ‘West Ryder…’ in the fact that in musical sound, it is much more similar to their earlier work. The album manages to plunge from the dizzying heights and silliness of title track ‘Velociraptor!’ to the solemn lyrics of ‘Goodbye Kiss’ a song which lead singer Tom Meighan has already singled out as a number people are going to fall in love to, get married to, etc. Bless.

The first single to hit the airwaves is in my opinion the strongest track on the album; dripping with the trademark production of Serge Pizzorno, it came out as a warning sign of what to come, as this song is huge, so the album…well, you my drift. The pumping beats and brilliant synth rotation in ‘Switchblade Smile’ (video here) will be enough to get your attention, but the lyrics of “can you feel it coming / can you feel it coming” just add to the songs pure adrenalin rush.

‘Days Are Forgotten’ is slinky, sexy and unashamedly cool (watch the video below). You may already be familiar with it from just about every advertising campaign around. But who can blame people for wanting this track on their product? It’s trademark Kasabian: a track with a chorus so simple, yet one which is layered with undulating guitars and the thumping bass which you become accustomed to on a Kasabian record.

As a record ‘Velociraptor!’ listens perfectly. It has changes of pace, it has excitement, and it has romance and a swagger which only Kasabian can really get away with. May they long continue to get away with it, as albums this good can only come about when you are truly confident in your abilities as musicians. And when you listen to this you won’t find it hard to gauge how good these Midlands boys know they are.
