TGTF Holiday Giveaway / WIN a CD and t-shirt prize pack from the Heartbreaks

By on Wednesday, 4th December 2013 at 4:00 pm

If this interview I did with The Heartbreaks in London back in May is any indication, the band’s second album is shaping up to be in fantastic shape for release in the new year. In October, they revealed new single ‘¡No Pasarán!’, glowingly reviewed by our Martin here. Off the back of the single release excitement and two rammed free shows in Manchester and London in November, the band have two additional dates in January scheduled: Thursday the 23rd of January at London Madame JoJo’s and Saturday the 25th of January at Manchester Deaf Institute.

The lads are in a giving mood this holiday season and we’re pleased to have a Heartbreaks prize pack up for grabs to give to a lucky TGTF reader. The winner will receive a copy of the lads’ debut album ‘Funtimes’ and their choice of either a ‘Fun Times’ or ‘¡No Pasarán!’ t-shirt like the one sported by drummer Joe Kondras below.

Want to win? Fill out the contest form below with your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you’re not a robot, correctly answer this question: what seaside town are the band from? (This is easy, right?) Get your entries in by noon British time on Monday the 9th of December. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received then. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only, as the prize will be posted. To make this fair for everyone, all duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed and the winner has been contacted.

Holiday wishes to all + (Holiday!) Video of the Moment #1078: She and Him

By on Friday, 21st December 2012 at 6:00 pm

In an appropriately seasonal offering, She and Him (the duetting duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Deschanel revisits her Elf film turn singing ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ not with Will Ferrell but her usual partner instead in this cutesy cartoon.

Happy holidays to you who is reading this post: we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. This year we’ve been honoured to cover SXSW, the Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Evolution Festival, Guernsey Festival, Standon Calling, Reading Festival, Jersey Live, Beacons Festival, Split Festival and even the 26th ARIAs (in Sydney!) And we hope to bring you even more great content next year, and of course the usual album, single and live reviews, new and freely available mp3s and brand spanking new videos you’ve come to expect from us.

Thank you to each and everyone of you who’s read what we had to say on the current state of music; all the hard-working bands that we can’t show our appreciation enough for but that we hope will continue to be successful; those bands to have gone out of their way to help and not hinder our attempts to bring you the best and brightest of new music; and of course everyone behind the bands and venues who aren’t given enough credit for what they do in our industry. We salute you all and hope you have a wonderful holiday, get exactly what you wanted this Christmas and have a fabulous, success-filled 2013! See you in the New Year!

(Holiday!) Video of the Moment #1077: Grizzly Bear

By on Thursday, 20th December 2012 at 6:00 pm

Grizzly Bear, who released their latest album ‘Shields’ just a couple weeks ago, have redone a couple of songs from the new album, just in time for the holidays.

The ‘video’ is nothing more than a collection of ‘happy’ and ‘zen’-type photos – you know, photos of Earth from space, hot air balloons, dogs playing poker (what???) – that you get in your email as PowerPoint slide shows, usually set to classical music. (Or maybe it’s just me who gets these PowerPoints, sent to me by my mum). Either way, have a listen to these reworkings, done instrumentally and with prominent piano.

Last Christmas, Tellison released a charity holiday single, ‘Good Luck It’s Christmas’. For this year, we’ve been notified that the song has been given post dubstep and synth flavours by London producer Grigori, so if you’re in the mood for something a little different, listen to and download the remix below.

I Dream in Colour release ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let It Go To Waste)’ in aid of Crisis UK homelessness charity

By on Tuesday, 18th December 2012 at 9:00 am

Our friends I Dream in Colour have made available a special holiday song for purchase on their Bandcamp.

It’s called ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let It Go To Waste)’, and as described by lead singer Richard Judge in a blog post here, they chose UK homelessness charity Crisis as the recipient of the song’s profits. Listen to the track below and if you like it, purchase it and support one of the most vulnerable populations this holiday season.
