Live Review: Ignite #004 starring Cara Rose, BETA WAVES, November Lights and Walt Disco at Glasgow St. Luke’s Church – 27th of November 2018

In the ‘dear green place’ live some very dear friends, so it’s no surprise I found myself the day after my birthday at a gig in a church. A “delightful church renovation habit” seems to be a ‘thing’ in Glasgow (see Oran Mor for probably the most feted). St. Luke’s in particular is pretty cool, as it’s adjacent to the Winged Ox bar, named for the fanciful creature the saint has been portrayed as in art. I’d been in here once before, its American feel oddly welcoming. This show was particularly special as it was the fourth in a series of them put on by the artist development project Ignite Scotland funded by Help Musicians UK and PRS Foundation. It was explained to me that acts chosen for these shows are some of Scotland’s best up-and-comers.

In Buchanan yellow tartan, Glaswegian blonde chanteuse Cara Rose (surname Dickson) opened the night with her soulful vocals. Her voice only accompanied by keyboard, the performance recalled the poppier vibes of Adele and the late Amy Winehouse. Turns out that Winehouse, along with Lianne La Havas and Lauryn Hill, are named on her Facebook as her primary influences. ‘No Safe Place’ is “an older song” Rose wrote about the plight of Syrian refugees. As Dickson notes in a sad tone, the sentiment is still as apt as when she first wrote it. Below is an amateur-shot video of the song being performed at St. Luke’s back in August.

‘Ready to Fall’ was a set standout, the staccatoing notes on the keyboard adding a touch of the dramatic while she showed off her impressive vocal range and control. Still, every young girl aspiring to be a singer wants to be the next Adele. Can she set herself apart from the rest of the pack? I’ll be keen on hearing more from her as she progresses.

Cara Rose IGNITE 004 2018

On paper and if judged solely by their stage setup alone, Dundonian duo (say that five times fast) BETA WAVES seemed made for me. Don’t get me wrong: the programmed beats and those played were indeed catchy, providing a needed energetic boost after Cara Rose’s set. I found their New Wave-leaning backing mesmerising. However, I felt the singer/guitarist’s vocals weren’t forceful or bright enough to stand up to the instrumentation.

‘Another Mad Crab’ (DIY promo video above) is their latest and final single to be released this year, and I wish it just had a bit more oomph both live and on recording. Previous single ‘Love Love Love’ fares better live, with a disco beat that’s head-bop worthy and a bit more life vocally. Soldiering on after a delay in start due to a wonky second-hand Macbook, I admire how they didn’t let the technical difficulties faze them.

Beta Waves IGNITE 004 2018

Glasgow via Ayrshire duo November Lights, augmented live by two additional band members, appear to be fully formed. I’m sure it must have taken a lot of time and effort to get to this place, but I had to admit I stood there wondering to myself why they haven’t been featured on BBC Radio 1 yet. The story goes that frontman and keyboardist James Hopkins was a solo artist initially, then tapped friends to put together a band to move forward with his musical vision. The American pop influence is palpable, with Hopkins having a Brandon Flowers’ like presence and charisma.

The anthemic feel of their music bears striking resemblance to the TGTF-tipped Kodaline (check out ‘Talk’ below) and The 1975. Hopkins’ energy as he busted out the dance moves on ‘Pray’ and their other uptempo tunes kept things lively; he looks remarkably like a young Ed Macfarlane from Friendly Fires. I’m expecting to wake up tomorrow and find out they’ve been signed to a major. I guess you gotta just watch this space.

The band chosen to close the Ignite Scotland show were Glasgow via Perth band Walt Disco, whose name I’m assuming is a Scottish pun on the Mickey Mouse creator. Lead singer James Potter has a theatrical, at times yelpy, at times warbly voice like David Bowie’s (see ‘Sling’ below). Bowie’s influence seems to have seeped into the band’s stage attire, which is proudly androgynous and eclectic. Seriously, how many musicians have you seen walking around with a crushed velvet shirt and golfing trousers?

With squealing guitars and a rhythm section much more muscular than that of the preceding acts, they were a welcome kick in the arse ending. While their off-kilter jangly guitar rock weren’t my cup of tea, I can totally see those looking for something different and willing to break out of the usual genre boxes to enjoy them. I went to a similar kind of young emerging acts’ night this time last year in York and in comparison, this night in Glasgow felt far more electric and better organised. I reckon it speaks to the level of talent and quality of acts that Ignite Scotland can put together a weeknight show like this and have a good turnout.

Sam Lewis / February and March 2019 UK Tour

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Sam Lewis will make his first trip to the UK in over two years at the beginning of 2019, with a list of live headline dates announced for February and March. Ahead of those shows, Lewis is slated to play at AmericanaFest UK at the end of January, presumably featuring songs from his fantastic recent LP release ‘Loversity.’ If you haven’t listened to that album yet, I highly encourage it; you can check out its second single ‘Natural Disaster’ at the bottom of the page.

According to Lewis’ official Facebook, further headline shows may be added to the following list. Keep an eye on his Facebook listing for updated information. TGTF’s coverage of Sam Lewis from SXSW 2018 is right back this way.

Video of the Moment #2896: Miles Kane

Singer/songwriter Miles Kane, whose stint with The Last Shadow Puppets by now feels like ancient history, has put out new promo video for the latest track from his recent solo album ‘Coup de Grace’. The LP was released back in August on Virgin EMI, following its early teaser single ‘Cry On My Guitar’. Kane’s new track, titled ‘Killing the Joke’, is mildly psychedelic in its sound and perhaps a more than a bit ironic in its lyrics.

The video treatment for ‘Killing the Joke’ was created by Daniele Cavalli and Manfredi Lucibello and set against the scenic backdrop of Florence. Its action sequences feature Kane alternately driving a sports car, wandering through empty yet architecturally striking corridors and drinking scotch in a deserted bar decorated with an assortment of crystal decanters. The black and white videography emphasises the kaleidoscopic reflection of light from the various gleaming surfaces and the sharp relief provided by the interplay of the resulting shadows.

Video of the Moment #2891: Metric

Canadian electropop band Metric have taken a different tack for the theme in their new music video than their contemporaries would have. Their intent for the new promo was to be as realistic as possible: ‘Now or Never Now’ was filmed in environments both musicians and music lovers are very familiar with: within the small hours in a nightclub and in a city where most of the revelers have gone and the only people left are those who have to be there. As provided on the press release:

“Many music videos take place in night clubs,” notes Nicholson [director Lorraine Nicholson], “very few depict them as they so often are: pensive, dark and depressing.” Metric frontwoman Emily Haines adds, “This was a night shoot leading to dawn, as Lorraine wanted to place the video in those most questionable hours of the morning…I’m profoundly lost and alone with random uncaring strangers…the rest of the band is on an urgent quest to find me and rescue me from this sad existence, but they always arrive too late.”

‘Now or Never Now’ appears on the band’s newest record ‘Art of Doubt’, available now from MMI/Crystal Math Music. The group will begin their world tour in support of the new album on the 25th of October in Moscow. The four UK dates on the tour are listed below and are on sale now. In the Post #163: Ben Howard follows his ‘Noonday Dream’ with three new tracks, including a surprise collaboration with alt-pop duo Sylvan Esso

Summer may be drawing to a close, but reminiscences of warm and sunny days are still fresh in our collective memory. With this in mind, singer/songwriter Ben Howard has just released a handful of new singles hot on the heels of his summer LP ‘Noonday Dream’, which was released back in June. As often happens, the recording sessions for the album were overly prolific, but in a fortunate sort of way. Howard himself says, “The recording sessions for ‘Noonday Dream’ were so varied and over quite a period of time. There were little gems that we didn’t know what to do with, but it felt right to put these three together, both separate and a part of the album, so to speak.”

One of those so-called gems is a surprise collaboration between Howard and American electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso. Called ‘Hot Heavy Summer’, the track does indeed feel tangentially related to the ephemeral vignettes on ‘Noonday Dream’. The addition of Amelia Meath’s backing vocals keeps the soundscape brighter and more buoyant than the title might imply, while the rounded hollow of the percussion beat lends a very definite substance to Howard’s otherwise evanescent arrangement. Apropos to the song’s title, ‘Hot Heavy Summer’ was featured as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World last Thursday, 13th September. Speaking on BBC Radio 1, Howard related that Meath’s lilting voice came immediately to mind for this song: “Amelia is just incredible, fortune prevailed, and we managed to get in the studio. I had it in the back of my mind as soon as we initially recorded ‘Hot Heavy Summer’ that the track just felt right for her.” If you’re interested in the full radio clip, you can listen back to it for a limited time on the BBC Radio 1 iPlayer.

‘Hot Heavy Summer’ is accompanied by two other tracks leftover from the ‘Noonday Dream’ sessions, a dark narrative called ‘Another Friday Night’ and the electronically experimental ‘Sister’. While these tracks don’t quite fit into the artistically cinematic nature of ‘Noonday Dream’, Howard is right in saying that they’re too good to go unheard. The 1975 / January 2019 UK Tour

Arguably Manchester’s biggest pop band of the moment The 1975 will be releasing their third album in November. You can get your mitts on ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ from Dirty Hit Records starting on the 30th of November. Naturally, the band will be touring the UK in support of their new record, but they’ve decided to wait until the start of next year to begin the UK leg of their campaign. Support for these shows will come from their buddies Pale Waves and no rome. Tickets to the following tour dates will go on sale next Friday, the 21st of September at 9 AM. Check out the video for ‘TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME’, starring a platinum blond Matty Healy no less, at the bottom of this post.
