MP3s of the Day #621: Benjamin Francis Leftwich

By on Wednesday, 12th September 2012 at 10:00 am

Benjamin Francis Leftwich has taken to record covers of M83‘s ‘Midnight City’ and Frightened Rabbit‘s ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’. And it’s your lucky day: he’s offering both of them for free download in exchange for your email address below. Enjoy.

From the man himself, about a possible new album release later in the year, we assume to follow after his October and November tour of the UK (?):

It’s great to be back in the studio. I’ve been on tour for the last year so it’s nice to be making new music again. I’m really proud of the new songs and I’m looking forward to sharing them with people. I’m in a really good creative headspace at the moment and feel like my song writing has developed whilst I’ve been on tour and experienced new people, places and things.

The new promo vid from Frightened Rabbit is for the song ‘State Hospital’. It’s a bit bleak, it’s a bit dark, but what do you expect when you flash back through some traumatic experiences? Watch it below.

MP3(s) of the Day #424: Frightened Rabbit

By on Friday, 21st October 2011 at 10:00 am

Frightened Rabbit are offering up a 3-track self-titled EP for free. Get it here. The EP will be available in limited quantities on vinyl from their label Fat Cat on the 31st of October.

One of my favourite female voices in music today, Traceyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura is a guest vocalist on the song ‘Fuck This Place’, which is a fab, harmonious cacophony (you have to hear it to understand this comment). If you want to read more on what Scott Hutchison has to say about each track, Drowned in Sound has a lovely piece on it here.

Mercury Prize 2010: TGTF Writer’s Choice

By on Monday, 6th September 2010 at 12:00 pm

Tomorrow night we will finally find out which album will be crowned the winner of the 2010 Mercury Prize. I’ve asked each of our writers to choose which album they think should win the gong this year, as well as which album they think was criminally absent from the 2010 shortlist. Hopefully you have watched the scene in the film ‘On the Waterfront’ where Marlon Brando says those iconic lines, “I coulda been a contendah! I coulda been somebody!” If not, watch this and you’ll get my meaning:

Like all good music reviewers, we’re an opinionated bunch here at TGTF. Continue beyond the cut for our picks…

Video of the Moment #298: Frightened Rabbit

By on Wednesday, 14th July 2010 at 6:00 pm

Not many bands could be put on the spot and record a great first take of a song. But Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit were real troopers for Shoot the Player, essentially the Oz version of the Black Cab Sessions and Watch, Listen, Tell. This is the video of the band playing ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’, terribly appropriate while they were being filmed at Australia’s famed Bondi Beach.

Frightened Rabbit tours the UK this November and December.
