Live Gig Video: Gavin James performs acoustic cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’

By on Monday, 17th October 2016 at 4:00 pm

I’m still catching up on bits I missed while I was in Ireland, including this video that Gavin James (who’s Irish, remember) released while he was touring in England. Two Fridays ago on the 7th of October, he played to a sold-out Shepherds Bush Empire in London. He has a few dates in England and Scotland this week before he leaves for the Continent, and you can view his touring schedule here on his official Web site.

So what is today’s live gig video about? Well, the Dublin singer/songwriter took it upon himself to re-envision Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ in an acoustic form. You can watch the magic unfold in the recorded filming of the cover in the studio in the monochromatic video below. We’ve been following Gavin for a while now, having supported fellow Irishman Kodaline in DC last year, and his appearance alongside them 3 years ago at the Great Escape 2013.

CMW 2016 Interview: NINA

By on Wednesday, 11th May 2016 at 11:00 am

Across Europe and the UK, electronic music has become a mainstay. Electropop in particular has become part of the fabric, if you will, of the music landscape and history for that part of the world. Originally from Berlin, musician NINA now calls London home. She’s working hard to make her mark as an up-and-coming electropop artist in this always busy part of the music market. She showcased last week at Canadian Music Week (CMW) 2016, playing two shows in Toronto during the festival. Ahead of the event in the Great White North, NINA kindly answered our Quickfire Questions tailored just for this year’s CMW, and you can read her answers back here.

In the below interview, she tells me about the supportive synthwave community she finds herself in and whose fans have kept her going. We also chat about a tour in North America she went on as support for Erasure. She’s maintained a friendship with them and managed a very useful connection production-wise that will likely prove priceless in the future of her music. Have a listen to our conversation and be a fly on the wall below. I’ve also embedded below the interview a stream of her self-described dream pop cover of Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’. She performed it at The (Dance) Cave Thursday night during CMW and it blew me away, so I wanted to share it with all of you.

Live Gig Video: Lucy Rose covers Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Bad Blood’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Tuesday, 14th July 2015 at 4:00 pm

Just last week, Lucy Rose released her much anticipated sophomore album ‘Work It Out’; read Carrie’s thoughts on the LP here. Naturally, she recently made an appearance on Radio 1 to talk up the album, and as is de rigueur for all artists doing so through the station, she was tasked to perform a cover of a current popular song. Along with a full band, Rose chose to perform Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Bad Blood’. From the outset, I was wondering how’d this turn out, but it actually turned out pretty good! Watch the performance below.

Lucy Rose will tour the UK and Ireland in October and November 2015. For all thing Lucy Rose on TGTF, right this way.

Live Gig Video: Everything Everything cover Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Heartbeat Song’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Thursday, 18th June 2015 at 4:00 pm

Everything Everything will be releasing their hotly anticipated third album ‘Get to Heaven’ next Monday. Ahead of that, they appeared in the Radio 1 Live Lounge to perform for presenter Clara Amfo. For their obligatory live cover, they decided to take the recent Kelly Clarkson megahit ‘Heartbeat Song’. Okay, so this sounds really strange to me with a male falsetto voice leading it, but there’s definitely a smooth jam feel to it, which makes it a quite unique treatment. Watch it below.

Everything (no pun intended) Everything Everything related we’ve got on TGTF is this way. ‘Get to Heaven’ will be released on the 22nd of June on Sony; catch the band on tour in the UK in November.

(SXSW 2015 flavoured!) MP3 of the Day #874: The People the Poet

By on Tuesday, 17th March 2015 at 10:00 am

South Wales band The People The Poet will be making their Austin live debut tonight as the opening band at Music Wales’ showcase at 8 PM at Latitude 30, the British Music Embassy’s home at SXSW 2015. To celebrate the momentous occasion, why not treat yourself to a free download to the band’s acoustic cover of fellow Welshmen and current indie rock darlings of the moment Catfish and the Bottlemen‘s ‘Hourglass’? Listen to the track and grab it for your very own below. (Incidentally, Catfish and the Bottlemen are also on tonight at 12 AM at the same venue, and it’s so nice when everything comes round full circle, isn’t it?)

My SXSW preview / Bands to Watch on the band is right this way, with their frontman Leon answering the SXSW 2015 flavoured Quickfire Questions here.

(SXSW 2015 flavoured!) Live Gig Video: James Bay covers Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s ‘FourFiveSeconds’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Friday, 6th March 2015 at 4:00 pm

Hat-wearing, guitar-toting singer/songwriter James Bay stopped by Radio 1’s famous Live Lounge recently. As per tradition, he had to choose a recent song to cover, and he chose Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney‘s ‘FourFiveSeconds’. As you can probably imagine, it’s a bit strange to watch as this isn’t really isn’t Bay’s usual genre. Watch him and his band knock it out for Fearne Cotton below.

Check out all our past coverage on James Bay here, including info on his UK tour next month. He’ll be playing a series of high-profile shows in Austin at SXSW 2015 in 2 weeks.
