Video of the Moment #2068: Asylums

By on Friday, 22nd April 2016 at 6:00 pm

Fiercely independent pop punk quartet Asylums have released yet another zany DIY video, this one for their new track ‘Necessary Appliances’, along with details of their debut album ‘Killer Brain Waves’. The ‘Necessary Appliances’ single release is set for the 29th of April, while the full LP is due out on the 29th of July, both naturally on the band’s own label Cool Thing Records.

‘Necessary Appliances’ is a stridently sarcastic commentary on Western consumerism, set to a persistent, anxious drum rhythm and abrasive guitar riff. The stark, rapidly shifting black and white video effects in the promo below are equally jarring, and thus illustrative of the song’s high-minded ideas about disposable culture and social interaction through digital media. The video’s setting takes its cue from the lyrics “lying in the bed they’ve made / conformity becomes a cage / as an intravenous coffee machine / feeds us caffeine”, and it is itself enough of a jolt to replace your morning cup of joe.

Video of the Moment #1959: Asylums

It’s Wednesday, the most hohum day of the week. You’re still wistful about the last weekend and you aren’t any closer to the next. We feel your pain. This will give you the kick in the rear you need.

Where could you have more fun than acting like a kid again in an indoor playground? In this new promo for ‘Missing Persons’, Asylums‘ most recent single released last month? More poppy (no pun intended) and accessible than previous single the Enemy and Ash. (I’ve jumped around onstage with the Enemy before, so I’m confident they are ready.) Watch the free-for-all video for ‘Missing Persons’ below.

I’m suffering from Great Escape 2015 withdrawal. There is just something to be said about music by the seaside. This includes music that is made by the seaside too. Asylums are from Southend-on-Sea, and I’m sure they’d be the first to say their freewheeling, DIY rock attitude comes from the town of their birth and can’t be reproduced in the confines of, say, a London or a Manchester. Check out below their upcoming single ‘Joy in a Small Wage’, which will be released on the 15th of June on the band’s own Cool Thing Records.
