Video(s) of the Moment #1854: Palma Violets

By on Tuesday, 14th July 2015 at 6:00 pm

Palma Violets released their second album ‘Danger in the Club’ in May on Rough Trade Records. Their current single ‘On the Beach’ now has its own promo video, which band member Sam Fryer explains:

Our friend, long-term collaborator and creator of the original ‘Best of Friends’ video Jim Tobias returned to direct the ‘On The Beach’ video for us. We wanted to create something live, simple, intense and low-grade with a summertime feel, but in a very British and overcast way.

Instead of just giving you this one video on this Video of the Moment post, we’ve got you a bonus! The lads performed the single on The Late Late Show with James Corden in June, and you can watch their live performance on his American network show below too. Enjoy.

Palma Violets perform the 10th of October at Norwich Owl Sanctuary as part of Dr. Marten’s #standforsomething UK tour this autumn. For more Palma Violets coverage on TGTF, go here.

Live Gig Video: Lucy Rose covers Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Bad Blood’ in Radio 1 Live Lounge

By on Tuesday, 14th July 2015 at 4:00 pm

Just last week, Lucy Rose released her much anticipated sophomore album ‘Work It Out’; read Carrie’s thoughts on the LP here. Naturally, she recently made an appearance on Radio 1 to talk up the album, and as is de rigueur for all artists doing so through the station, she was tasked to perform a cover of a current popular song. Along with a full band, Rose chose to perform Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Bad Blood’. From the outset, I was wondering how’d this turn out, but it actually turned out pretty good! Watch the performance below.

Lucy Rose will tour the UK and Ireland in October and November 2015. For all thing Lucy Rose on TGTF, right this way.

Beat-Herder 2015 Preview: editor Mary’s best band bets

By on Tuesday, 14th July 2015 at 11:00 am

Please note: Beat-Herder Festival 2015 is completely sold out, so beware of dodgy resellers. Information provided in this post is current at the time of posting but we encourage you to visit the official Beat-Herder Web site and keep up to date on their Twitter for news on the event as it happens.

Beat-Herder Festival 2015 starts up this Friday, the 17th of July, in Sawley, Lancashire. We ran a contest for a pair of weekend tickets earlier this month, and now I’ve been asked to provide my best bets for the 3-day event. And without further adieu…

The Lancashire Hotpots
It’s not really a Lancs event with The Lancashire Hotpots. The Merseyside comedy man will be sure to raise a smile with their Northern wit and catchy tunes.

The Lancashire Hotpots will be performing Sunday on the main Beat-Herder stage.

Some have argued that Leftfield isn’t really Leftfield anymore with the absence of founding member Paul Daley. What cannot be denied is ‘Alternative Light Source’, the act’s first album in 16 years that was released in June, has already made a huge impression on the record-buying public, handily cracking the top 10 of the UK albums chart despite such a long absence. From Neil Barnes, you should expect nothing but bangers.

Leftfield will be headlining the main Beat-Herder stage Sunday night.

Mr. Scruff
He’s a very funny, tea-drinking guy from Manchester who stumbled into his own eclectic style DJaying from what else, his own eclectic influences ranging from “(in order of appearance) Blues, 2 Tone, Ska, Nasty pop music, Electro, Hip Hop, Soul, House, Funk, Jazz, Reggae”. I think it goes without saying that his will be a very enjoyable set to experience.

Mr. Scruff will be performing at Toil Trees on Sunday.

Only Real (pictured at top)
Continuing on with the theme of artists not taking themselves too seriously, Niall Galvin aka Only Real will be bringing his sunny ‘Jerk at the End of the Line’ tunes to Beat-Herder. Hopefully the vibes will get the natives to dance as they did at SXSW 2015.

Only Real will be performing at the Jagerhaus (date / time TBA).

Stealing Sheep
Having released their synth-heavy second album ‘Not Real’ in April, the all-girl trio from Liverpool are no doubt raring to unleash their newest tunes on a sympathetically Northern crowd. Let’s hope they bring along their coloured nylons!

Stealing Sheep will be performing at the Jagerhaus (date / time TBA).

Live Gig Video: Slaves perform upcoming single ‘Sockets’ at London Scala

By on Monday, 13th July 2015 at 4:00 pm

Irrepressible punks Slaves will be releasing “a high octane love song”, ‘Sockets’, on the 4th of September on Virgin EMI. To celebrate the release, they’re sharing this live video from one of their gigs in May 2015 at London Scala performing the track. If you know anything about the hard-rocking duo, you know that at least one of them (usually two) go shirtless at shows, they can be very funny and they’re loud and unapologetic about their music, all to the delight of their fans. (And I should know: I saw this all unfold at Brighton Coalition back in that month during The Great Escape 2015.) Watch the blistering performance below.

All of our past coverage on Slaves is here.

The Orb / November 2015 UK Tour

By on Monday, 13th July 2015 at 9:00 am

Legendary ambient house duo The Orb released their 13th studio album ‘Moonbuilding 2073 AD’ in late June and on Kompakt Records, the famed electronic German label who released their 2005 LP ‘Okie Dokie It’s The Orb on Kompakt’. In this brave new world of new soundscapes from the pioneering London duo, it only makes sense that they have announced a headline UK tour for November 2015 to show off their new wares. They will be supported on all UK dates by DJ and producer Dave DK. Tickets are on sale now.

The UK dates conclude a worldwide tour that begins after summer festival season in America, in Miami on the 4th of September.

Saturday 7th November 2015 – Brighton Arch
Friday 13th November 2015 – London Oval Space
Saturday 14th November 2015 – Manchester Ritz
