Video of the Moment #2871: The Belle Sounds

The Belle Sounds are a Austin-via-California folk rock band who I have only just come across. Describing yourself as a modern day Fleetwood Mac with timeless songwriting akin to that of Neko Case, Aimee Mann and The Shins, you’ve got to be pretty confident in yourself. Judging from lush single ‘Like a Villain’, the group led by husband-wife team of frontwoman Noëlle Hampton and electric guitarist André Moran (hmm, smells like Arcade Fire?) have reason to be that cocksure. Hampton says it was a cathartic exercise to write the lyrics to this song, describing the panic attacks, anxiety and claustrophobia that has affected her over the years. With the music video, she wanted to take things one step further:

“Writing ‘Like A Villain’ was cathartic for me but I knew that there was an opportunity with a music video to go even deeper into healing and facing it down. As Barbara FG, the director, and I talked about it more and more, it became clear what we had to do for the video. We wanted to show the inner workings of my mind in a beautiful and disturbing way, how someone can go from a place of power and control to absolutely wrecked in a few minutes. I am fascinated by the human mind and how we can show ourselves as brave souls while these dark, often traumatic thoughts are still right under the surface. I wanted to put myself in some situations that would actually cause a panic attack and face it in front of people, which is exactly what happened. It was my version of systematic desensitization therapy. Being a 45-year old woman about to be the focal point of the video was hard enough to imagine, but then being naked, taped, as ugly as I have ever been and then stuffed in a tiny triangle mirror room took it to a whole other level of uncomfortable.”

Underpinned by a funky bass line, ‘Like a Villain’ from The Belle Sounds is a song that you won’t soon forget. Watch the equally memorable video for it below. The song appears the band’s new album ‘The Sea Within’, which is out this Friday, the 20th of July.
