Live Gig Video: The Civil Wars reveal behind the scenes studio cut of ‘The One That Got Away’

Back in November, it seemed as though the Grammy-winning duo The Civil Wars might be breaking up. But with the release of this luscious new video for ‘The One That Got Away’ and a new album on the horizon, hope is restored.

Opening with haunting chords from John Paul White’s impeccable playing, Joy Williams’ voice reaches through your chest immediately; tension is aptly represented. Knowing White and Williams’ recent difficulties, it makes you wonder if it wasn’t filmed while they were still dancing around each other, wondering if the re-collaboration was going to work.

What was rampant throughout the first album, harmonies to die for, chemistry and lyrics dripping with emotion, is back in full force. The musical separation did them no harm and perhaps bated us even further for their taut songs of tension and longing. Look for the self-titled sophomore effort to be released the 5th of August on Sensibility Music/Columbia Records.
