Single Review: Jake Bugg – Lightning Bolt

I’m pretty sure it’s slightly unfair on established folk singers that Jake Bugg has managed such an authentic sound at the ripe age of 18. I’m not even a folk singer and I’m a little bitter that someone younger than me has such talents. Hailing from Nottingham, he was born in possibly the place furthest away from Folsom State Prison.

Jake Bugg apparently discovered music through a Don Mclean song, a fact that becomes clear when listening to his newest song to be released on the 4th of June. As short in length as the name would suggest, ‘Lightning Bolt’ is the follow-up single to Radio1 favourite, ‘Trouble Town’.

The track is driven by a riff not too dissimilar from his debut, but goes great with the troubadour’s 60s-esque vocals. ‘Lightning Bolt’ is a step on from “Trouble Town,” which was a Dylan-influenced comment on the Nottingham estates he grew up on. A summer hit, Jake’s new single is immensely enjoyable.

The 18-year old has already supported commercial successes such as Lana Del Rey and Example on tour; not to mention the fact that he has just stepped off the plane from supporting Michael Kiwanuka’s European tour. Jake is one to watch for 2012, being hotly tipped by critics and DJs alike. “Lightning Bolt” is a great example of the unique talents the Clifton lad has to offer and quite excitedly believe that we’ve not heard the best of him yet. Very much looking forward to the debut album coming in October this year.

8.5/10

‘Lightning Bolt’, the new single from Jake Bugg, will be released on Monday (4th of June) on Mercury Records.
