10 for 2012: #5 – Don Scannell

In the last couple weeks, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2012. For #5, we head to the Emerald Isle…

A surprise entry on the list is Don Scannell. His quite frankly beautiful bit of music will stand out amidst the jangling noise that sometimes pours from your speakers. Beautiful music complete with cello and choir will whisk you away to some place calm and lovely.

Not content with his life path as an accountant from County Cork, Scannell sets out to make a name for himself in music. This is ably done with the newly released video for ‘Mystery’. The video showcases the work of London’s Little Angel Theatre, one of Britain’s premiere puppet theatres. I would never have expected puppets to bring such delicate life to this or any other song.

The cover art of his debut album hauntingly suggests the thestrals of Harry Potter fame – a horse stripped down to its blackened skeleton. This is a bit indicative of his music; stripped down for sure, dark and evocative. Unlike thestrals though, death in your life is not necessary to enjoy Scannell. In fact the lyrics in this eloquent album are full of strength and life.

“Leave me breathless with your music”, he croons. His words slip over piano, woven with strings, interlaced with a bit of folksy guitar, Scannell offers us a little piece of his soul. I’ve taken it to heart. And if given a change, I think loads of other people will as well. You can listen to more of Don Scannell on his Soundcloud.
