Single Review: FOE – Deep Water Heart Breaker

If you are looking for dirty, sleazy guitars, you have come to the right place. FOE’s new single ‘Deep Water Heart Breaker’ is littered with some of the grimiest… no, filthiest guitars and lyrics that there is no wonder there is such a buzz around them at the moment.

On first listen all I could think of was the similarities between it and anything Blondie have ever produced, but I managed to get that thought out my mind. This song is all about relationships; no, not the good kind, the ones that go sour. The drums are tight and help along the songs naturally sombre pace, while the aforementioned guitars screech along at a steady rate. FOE manage to conjure up an effective image with their sleazed up lyrics and with a chorus that pings around your brain; they could be on to a serious winner here.

The tune is mixed by Craig Silvey (the Horrors‘ Primary Colours’, Stornoway‘s ‘Beachcomber’s Windowsill’ [review here], Arcade Fire‘s ‘The Suburbs’), so naturally the production is flawless while managing to sound DIY at the same time. Gritty it may be but the tune is good overall, an impressive debut for an artist tipped by many to turn a lot of heads. Watch this space FOE are coming to break a heart near you soon.

FOE’s ‘Deep Water Heart Breaker’ is available now through Stella Mortos, who’ve teamed up with Vertigo Records for the single release.
