(Holiday) Single Review: Hurts – All I Want for Christmas is New Year’s Day

The Manchester electro-pop duo Hurts have gained success from their hits ‘Better Than Love’ and Wonderful Life’ and received much positive feedback from critics from their debut album released in September. But now it’s December, which is the time of year various artists release Christmas-related songs, and Hurts is no exception. Released on the 14th of December as a free digital download, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day’ paints a vivid image of a Christmas card in your mind. Regardless of geographic restrictions, you can see the snowy white imagery in your mind. Beginning with a string of ringing bells, the song is then joined by vocals and synths. The song expresses hope towards the next year, a similar encouraging effect as was seen with ‘Wonderful Life’.

But one thing I do not like about this song is that I find it a little too repetitive. It seems to me that Hurts have a tendency of repeating choruses in their songs (‘Wonderful Life’, ‘Better Than Love’, ‘Affair’). That same magic does not seem to work in this case. Instead, I find it repulsive this time. My reaction might be also caused by the repetitive ringing of bells in the background. We all expect Christmas songs like this to be cliche; however, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day’, interestingly, has a slight twist. Rather than putting the focus on Christmas Day, Hurts have put theirs on New Year’s Day – I reckon that as pioneering?

You can check out the video for ‘All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day’ below. If you have been following Hurts for a while, it is not hard to spot a few characters who have previously appeared in their past videos, except for this time, they all gather together in the snow. This is a generally pleasing radio-friendly single. My comment to them, though – Hurts, never again. They are better at writing emotional pop songs rather than Christmas songs, which are a dime a dozen.

6.5/10
