10 for 2011: #1 – Mona

Last month, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2011. And here we are, at #1, ready to unveil the big cheese, the big kahuna. After all the votes had been counted, the band the majority of you voted for was, interestingly enough, not a UK band at all. The winner of the TGTF 10 for 2011 poll, we present to you: Mona.

Comprised for four blokes from Ohio who relocated to the most guitar-inclined hub of the South, Nashville, Mona is as American as American bands come. Yet they have already made a splash in the UK and Europe, on the back of a successful, if short ‘tour’ – dates in Hamburg, Germany, and then three live dates in London at the end of September into early October. Tonight they play Manchester’s Night and Day, the third in a series of nine gig dates in the UK this month. Based on location and sound, the Kings of Leon comparison is inevitable. So what have Mona got that will distance them from the Followills?

They definitely are not ones too shy to toot their own horn; they have purportedly anointed themselves as “the new face of rock and roll”. Pretty ballsy. Even before any of us outside their small Ohio town, lead singer Nick Brown was already declaring they’d be “bigger than Bono [and U2]”. Again, them’s fighting words! Watch, listen and enjoy the video for Mona’s song ‘Listen to Your Love’ below.
