Abbey Road Debuts (Pilot Episode) – Everything Everything perform and talk with Tom Ravenscroft

I am pleased to announce that on late Friday night (er…very early Saturday morning) Channel 4 will premiere a pilot for a possible new programme called ‘Abbey Road Debuts’. If you like ‘Live at Abbey Road’, it’s got a similar feel, but what the makers of this show are trying to go for is presenting new musical talent, bands you’ve probably never heard of because they have yet to get any broadcast or mainstream attention. Think of BBC Radio’s ‘In New Music We Trust’ segments but having a telly counterpart – beautifully shot telly with amazing sound in a historic place – and you have the general gist of what I’m talking about.

Interestingly, when this pilot was shot, they chose Manchester’s Everything Everything as their guests. At the time, almost no one knew who they were, as they had just signed to a record label. Fast forward to where we are in October and look at the band now: they just played a sold-out gig at home (Manchester Deaf Institute on Tuesday) and have been making waves all around the world on the strength of their debut album ‘Man Alive’ released in the UK in August (read my review here).

So I take their choice of Everything Everything as their first guests as a very good sign, a sign that the people behind ‘Abbey Road Debuts’ will take their jobs seriously if this is to become a regular show like ‘Live at Abbey Road’ and will present some amazing up-and-coming talent if given the opportunity.

The show is hosted by BBC 6music presenter and the late John Peel’s son Tom Ravenscroft, whose disarming and laidback demeanour is perfect as he speaks to the Manchester-based quartet as they get ready to perform for a very small (and may I add very lucky) group of fans in the round. The thought of being in one of Abbey Road’s studios with one of my favourite bands gives me chills. The effect is a visually and sonically stunning experience even more intimate than ‘Live at Abbey Road’, and I really like the idea behind the programme. Let’s hope it gets picked up for a series (fingers crossed).

Be sure and watch the pilot episode of ‘Abbey Road Debuts’ with Everything Everything on Channel 4 at 12.35 AM GMT on Friday night / Saturday morning.
