Album Review: Kassidy – The Rubbergum EP Vol. 2

If the omnipresent dust commonly shown in those spaghetti westerns should ever collide with the rural countryside of Scotland, then it would go by the name of Kassidy. Hailing from Glasgow (okay, so mentioned city isn’t exactly a one horse town), this four piece folk rock group are steadily becoming more recognized by the airwaves and publications alike.

Thank god the majority of their growing success has nothing to do with their choice of western wear either. Because behind the large brimmed hats, stringy hair and fascinatingly large beards, Kassidy do know how to kick out some solid tunes. And Mercury Records seem to have thought so, too. After all, they signed the band to a four album deal for an ample sum of money.

Cash aside, a debut album is currently in the pipeline for the band. Luckily for the impatient, Kassidy have also just released ‘The Rubbergum EP Vol. 2’, which provides a wide sampling of the band’s unique talent of how they can easily infect your ear with eclectic songs. ‘Take Another Ride’, for example, opens as a slow burner that hinges of sounding like something the Eagles or other ‘70s band in that same vein, but happily is less cheesy and a lot more appealing to listen to.

The EP will also delight fans of acoustic melodies and harmonic bliss, as ‘La Revenge’ provides a catchy mellowness that bares its soul for the world to see and sympathisize with. “The Lost” meanwhile kicks things up with an up-tempo, cat-chasing-mouse type song. If ‘The Rubbergum Vol. 2’ is anything to go by, then things will certainly be on the up and up for the band. Rightfully so, too. Not only do they prove that they are capable of creating varied and catchy tunes, but they also remind us that one shouldn’t judge by looks alone.

‘The Rubbergum EP Vol. 2’ by Kassidy is available now from Amazon UK. Their tour of the UK starts next Tuesday in Dundee.
