Bands to Watch #189: One Night Only

Here on TGTF, we’ve occasionally mentioned North Yorkshire indie band One Night Only but have yet to properly introduce them. Between my mild obsession with their latest single ‘Say You Don’t Want It’ and the imminent release of their new self-titled album (due out 23 August), I figured it was time. Formed in Helmsley, the band’s current lineup includes George Craig (lead vox/guitar), Mark Hayton (guitar/backing vox), Daniel Parkin (bass), Jack Sails (keyboards, backing vox) and James Craig (drums).

James is the the most recent addition, formerly of Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, and replaced previous drummer Sam Ford just earlier this year. The band originally formed back in 2003, and hadn’t come up with a name when they were asked to do a gig. They decided on the temporary name ‘One Night Only’ because they only intended it to be used for one night, but it has stuck to this day!

One Night Only has an infectious energy without having music that is relentlessly peppy and sugary, and perhaps this is why in 2008 the Daily Mail referred to them as “a boy band with bite”. And sure, their youth and good looks may have something to do with it as well, but underneath it all, there is a real maturity to their new music. The chorus for single ‘Say You Don’t Want It’ (watch the video below) is absolutely massive and will be in your head for days: “The big screens, the plastic-made dreams/ Say you don’t want it, say you don’t want it / It’s our world, the picture-book girls / Say you don’t want it, say you don’t want it / Don’t you ask me if it’s love my dear / Love don’t really mean a thing round here / The fake scenes the plastic-made dreams / Say you don’t want it, say you don’t want it”. During the smoothly delivered verses, the song feels as if its teetering on the edge, until you can’t wait for the chorus and your chance to go absolutely mental.

I really hope to see them live some day, as I can only imagine how great it must be live with the whole crowd singing along. Also worth checking out is ‘Daydream,’ for which they’ve included a “studio music video” as a part of their “ONO Wednesdays” series, where they post a new video each week – generally a behind-the-scenes look of some sort. Available as a b-side on the ‘Say You Don’t Want It’ single that’s out now, the song is a bit more restrained, and features some gorgeous harmonies and a great guitar hook over a driving beat – fabulous.

Do yourself a favour: get their album when it comes out next week, and then go see them during their UK tour in the autumn. They’ll only get bigger and bigger from here.
