MGMT talk about Congratulations, Futureheads discuss Lady Gaga

MGMT (pictured top) are very much attracting the headlines at the moment with their new album, Congratulations, available for stream now on their official website and dividing opinions. Personally, they’re sounding a bit too “out there” for my liking from a first listen, but they’re sure to be one of this summer’s festival darlings.

They spoke to Zane Lowe on Gonzo’s brown couch the other day, musing their planning on the album. “We didn’t really have a big plan, we just wanted to sit down and write songs, and this is what happened” says frontman Andrew Van Wyngarden, clearly a fan of the forward planning, whilst Ben Goldwasser explains the fuller sound we get from Congratulations. “It was a group effort. Andrew and I still spent some time before we got the whole band together, writing stuff and kind of starting to figure out what it was going to sound like. Definitely felt like the whole band was part of making it”.

As you’d expect, recording their album inevitably bought up a few “interesting” experiences – though admittedly not the drug-fuelled ones I was expecting – “I saw [Mel Gibson] eating a beigel one day, he puts a beigel in his mouth one bite at a time, just like everyone else”. Insightful Andrew, fascinatingly insightful.

Meanwhile, in another high-brow conversation, The Futureheads‘ brothers Barry and Dave discussed the merits of a certain Lady Gaga. “I hate her music, I don’t dislike her personally, I think she’s quite interesting… her music’s awful” Dave commented, whilst his Barry disagrees “I think she’s a breath of fresh air at last, we’ve been waiting. Compare her with Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake, they’re just dancers. She is a musician and an artist.” Could this mark a fascinating new twist in the Futurheads saga? A split due to their differing Lady Gaga opinions? You heard it here first…

If you want to hear more from MGMT or Futureheads, you can catch them on Gonzo on MTV Rocks tonight at 10pm.

Great post- such a long-awaited album and I’m really enjoying it so far. Quite a bit different from Oracular but equally interesting and fun. Definitely recommend everyone check it out.
