In the Post #56: United Nations of Sound (Richard Ashcroft) – Are You Ready?

Love him or leave him, Richard Ashcroft is fronting a new band, United Nations of Sound, and we’ll supposedly see a new album out later this month. I say supposedly because it’s been something akin to a wild goose chase trying to track down reliable bits and pieces regarding the ex-Verve singer’s latest effort. If you think the name for the new band is cheesy, just wait until you hear ‘Are You Ready’ – a guitar-pulsing song with Mad Richard belting out not the most original lines in a repeated manner for just over five minutes.

Now, that’s a nutshell description. But really, listen for yourself, and see if there’s anything more earth-shattering to say about it. As much as I respect Ashcroft when he was at his lyrical/musical greatness with The Verve – and yes, even sometimes as a solo artist – ‘Are You Ready’ brings a generic blandness that sputters down into a mission of disappointment. If this song alone is anything to go by, then maybe United Nations of Sound is more apt to sing praise songs at some youth fellowship retreat. The album after all has been titled ‘Redemption’.

That said, upon hearing Ashcroft’s swooning vocals, it’s hard not to feel a bit of nostalgia for the old days of when he was with his fellow musical comrades. If only he kept his trap shut, The Verve still might be kicking out real rock tunes, not superficial ones from what seems to be a contrived bunch.
