10 for 2010: #10 – Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

A couple of weeks back, we asked you to vote for your top 10 artists for 2010. We had almost 600 votes, and we’re now going to countdown the top 10 over the next 10 days, finishing with our number 1 on 10th December at midday. Today, kicking off the countdown, are Camden’s very own Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, who we first introduced back in September…

Ou Est Le Swimming PoolOu Est Le Swimming Pool are kinda of a big deal – out supporting La Roux on her UK tour at the moment, they manage to be that happy middle ground that keeps music snobs, clubbers and the casual pop fan happy and enthralled. Drawing on tonnes of 80s influences (Pet Shop Boys / Human League anyone?) but updated to modern standards (Passion Pit / La Roux style), they’re pretty darned amazing. Their debut single, “Dance the Way I Feel” has been remixed by Armand Van Helden, and you can’t help but feel that this is just the shallow end of the pool before they progress to the diving boards to show off all their skills.

Getting their name from French lessons, they don’t take themselves all too seriously… “It started in a French lesson,” begins the moustachioed keyboardist Joe. “I’d start banging out a beat and Caan would drop a bassline and our guitarist Charles would come up with these ridiculously funny lyrics, we just needed a name for it.” Luckily for the Camden-based trio, their teacher Monsieur Jones provided all the inspiration they needed. “He used to ask these questions, and we just went with what he was saying at the time, it was a bit of a joke really.” they told Clash magazine.

Take a listen to their other tracks and you’ll soon realise that “Dance the Way I Feel” is no one hit wonder – if you’re watching out for some hipster nerds with mainstream appeal in 2010, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are your guys.

[…] Le Swimming Pool to DJ between sets. Yes, that’s right, the same Ou Est Le Swimming Pool that finished in our top “10 for 2010″ poll last year. The same Ou Est Le Swimming Pool that are supporting La Roux in a few months. Oh […]
