Everyone loved MGMT last summer – trippy but pop tastic, Baby Monster are like MGMT for the goth crowd – still poppy but so much darker. Layered synths that could fill a stadium, dis-embodied voices that would creep out the most sane of people, and a beat that will have you at least moving your hips a bit. They were kind enough to answer a few questions from us…

Hello Baby Monster. What are you up today?
hi. we are looking for a place to stay in NYC and also finishing an ellie goulding remix.

Where did you get the name, Baby Monster from? It sounds like the sort of name that has a great story behind it…
We have a friend who paints these crazy paintings that depict his dreams and one of the characters he created was “The Baby Monster” which sipped Budweiser and controlled our friend’s mind..Its a great painting.

What do you love about Eugene and Oregon, and what do you dislike about it?
Lots of creative people, artists, university small town atmosphere. It’s also quiet, dark and rainy you are left to your own devices..

You’ve worked with some great artists recently – who have been your personal favourites?
Wolf Gang and Zero 7. We’ve been listening to Zero 7 for a long time so it was pretty cool to get to remix one of their tracks.

How are you feeling about your live debut next week at CMJ? Nervous?
Our live debut was actually at a bowling alley in east LA in front of two 45 year old mexican ladies. We are pretty excited to be going back to NYC, it is a little unnerving.

We’re five years down the line. Baby Monster are huge, they sell out arenas. What is the Baby Monster live experience like?
We’ll have muppets playing in place of us. Maybe holograms. We’ll be sitting at home in the Eug. watching a movie while our holograms are out performing on a world tour.

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?
Southtowne Lanes Bowling Alley in Eugene, OR

Finally, what music, books and TV / films are you really enjoying at the moment?
Listening to: The Blimp, Black Uhuru, Air, The Four Tops
Reading: Valis by Horselover Fat, The Fingerprints of the gods, “You Can’t Win” by Jack Black (not the actor)

MP3: Baby Monster – Ultra Violence and Beethoven
