Dan BlackDan Black, master of all things electro pop in 2009, is gearing up for the release of perhaps his biggest single to date, Symphonies (our video of the day yesterday) on June 29th and then his debut album, ((un)) on 6th July. Ahead of the release of what could possibly be one of the highlights of our summer, we were fortunate enough to grab a few quick words with Dan last week…

Hello Dan. What are you up to today?
Answering lots of questions. It’s supposed to be a day off but the inbox keeps on piling up!

Apparently you spend much of your time in Paris. Do you regard Paris as home now? What does Paris have that England doesn’t?
Yes, Paris is home for me now. I didn’t leave the UK because it lacked something that Paris has. It was more just a “life is short, don’t want to experience living in just one country before I die” kind of thing.

You were on a lot of people’s “ones to watch” list for 2009. Who else do you tip for big things in coming months / years?
My tip is for Discovery. It’s a guy out of Vampire Weekend and another out of Ra Ra Riot and it sounds kind like T-Pain meets Daft Punk – but good!

You were one of the first of the musicians / bands to really take Twitter seriously, along with offering lots of tracks for free to bloggers and the like – do you think that the internet has played a big role in your success so far? How do you see the future of the music industry?
Surely its a done deal now, the internet is here and integral to all we do. It definitely was key in me finding a manager, deal and just getting people into my music. But it has meant our attention spans have shrunk and that the value of music – particularly recorded music, has changed. Gone are the days when you saved up all your pocket money to buy a new album. As to what the future holds, with my present schedule, right now I am trying not to think what lies beyond the next 2 weeks!

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?
Maybe the bottom of the atlantic ocean… or inside the mind of Ludwig Wittgenstein

What was the last gig you went to as a punter?
Friendly Fires last week.

Okay, we’re five years down the line, and you’ve got a huge sold out arena tour planned, taking in just about every possible major city. What’s the Dan Black live experience like?
Giant robot insects do battle, holographic figures from history do huge synchronized dance routines, while I sing, levitating, covered in purple flames!

And finally, what’s coming up for the rest of the year for you?
Hopefully many wonderful surprises…
