Bands to Watch #120: Skint and Demoralised

Skint and Demoralised (side)Skint & Demoralised is the crazy stage name for 20 year old Wakefield lyricist, Matt Abbott, and Sheffield songwriter-producer, MiNi dOG. After meeting over MySpace circa 2007, the pair went on to record some demos together, with MiNi dOG taking Abbott’s poetry and putting it to sharp beats. The recordings were sent out, resulting in the band’s airplay and download figures abruptly soaring. Following on from this, Skint & Demoralised were speedily signed up by Mercury Records, and the guys have been working on their debut album, ‘Love and Other Catastrophes’ – due for release in October – ever since.

A mixture between Mike Skinner and a young John Cooper Clarke, Abbott cheekily sings about everyday realities, his voice adoringly coated with his regional Yorkshire accent. “She likes red lipstick, fish and chips, orange juice and trips to the seaside”, Matt proclaims on additive pop-number, ‘Red Lipstick’, due for release mid-July. Indeed, Abbott’s cute, clever and comedic lyrics – delivered in a distinct spoken-word style – are generally pretty irresistible. Take O.L.I.V.I.A, for example, where Matt tells us how “I went into a bar one night, and I saw this girl and she were absolutely gorgeous. So I finished off my pint, and I tried looking cool, and then I’m whacked in my back, by a guy playing pool.”. Put to the backing of poppy, and at times super groovy beats (as provided by MiNi dOG). Skint & Demoralised are certainly set to be your mid-2009 guilty pleasure.
