Bands to Watch #97: The Voluntary Butler Scheme

Voluntary Butler Scheme (side)This week we’d like to introduce The Voluntary Butler Scheme. Despite the fact their name initially suggests this is a several member strong group, and despite the fact that their MySpace cheekily declares Marc Bolan, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash as just three of these members, The VBS are in fact a one-man-band – and that one man in question is Mr. Rob Jones.

And boy does he manage to make super delightful sounds despite the fact he’s on his lonesome. Rob’s sparkly retro-pop is an absolute joy to listen to. Bubbling over with cheery hand-claps, sunny harmonicas and brilliantly witty lyrics (“If you were broccoli, I’d turn vegetarian for you. And if you bought running shoes, as out of breath as I’d get, I’d buy running shoes too”), The Voluntary Butler Scheme are colourful DIY musical-greatness. The nostalgic doo-wop sounds only add to this Stourbridge-man’s brilliance. Indeed, listening to The Voluntary Butler Scheme is like stepping back into the pop splendour of the 60’s, only with added quirky humour that is guaranteed to have you smiling…maybe even skipping.. all the way home.

“Just like coffee and tea, I need you regularly” Rob sings. I think this is certainly the case for me and The Voluntary Butler Scheme.

Check out The Voluntary Butler Scheme’s MySpace page, and the super video to ‘Multiplayer’, below, and if you like it download a free EP from Music Glue, and enter the competition to remix his next single
