Live Review: The Sherlocks with Pinkwench at DC9, Washington, DC – 9th November 2017

“Last night…can you remember?”

Actually, I can. With a smile on my face.

Sometime between my last visit to DC9 seeing Aussies Gang of Youths last year, and with little to no fanfare, the venue level of the Washington club on 9th Street Northwest has undergone a transformation. DC9 is the 200 capacity, lovably unpretentious, slightly scruffy club within view of its polar opposite, the behemoth 9:30 Club. As a journo, there is great comfort knowing I can stumble into DC9 without queueing during the opening act, get a drink without waiting and not worry about getting jostled or ‘tude from fairweather music fans who are absentmindedly paying attention to the action onstage. Now with booths removed and 21st century stage lighting and branding on the back walls installed – taking a page from sister NE club The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hotel, no doubt – DC9 has been updated and refreshed, and it can only be to their guests’ benefit.

Chasing who will be ‘the next great British guitar band’ has become a bit of a joke among music journalists. Britain churns out so many hopefuls, and only the very few will have any lasting power. As such, we have to guess and look into our crystal balls to guess who will still be here, putting out great music, 5 years from now. I had initial reservations, but a famous friend encouraged me to give this new group from Sheffield a chance. Having most recently come off a UK tour in September with sold out shows, The Sherlocks have admirably put in the work touring the UK the last few years, and they have a few feathers in their cap already. The hard work paid off, getting them a shout for SXSW 2016, appearing on the BBC Introducing evening showcase that was filmed by the Beeb. According to their Twitter, their top 10 debut album ‘Live for the Moment’, released at the end of August on Infectious Records / BMG, is the best-selling debut album of any UK artist this year so far.

Like so many acts from across the pond before them, America is still unproven ground for the Sherlocks. Things are already looking good from the outset, though: having been interviewed by Billboard and filming a live session for Paste, they’re already ticking boxes most up-and-coming bands in blighty can only fantasise of. Luckily for us here in Washington, they chose to end a short East Coast tour at DC9 Thursday night. Having followed in the footsteps of The 1975, Royal Blood and Catfish and the Bottlemen, one can’t help but think this is merely the start for the Yorkshire band over here. Opening the night were relative locals Pinkwench from Baltimore. Offering up a washy guitar experience recalling shoegaze and mixing in the melancholy of grunge, I was impressed with their wall of sound.

Generally, starting a set earlier than an appointed start time isn’t a good idea. You want everyone who’s paid to get in to have already arrived, especially if you’re a young band with a limited back catalogue. However, The Sherlocks threw this wisdom out the window, clearly itching and eager to get on with their show to reward those who had assembled early at DC9 for them. Straight out of the gate, they launched into the anthemic ‘Last Night’, a cautionary tale from one bro to another. With its high octane guitars and punishing drum line, ‘Will You Be There?’ was another early highlight.

The Sherlocks’ brand of muscular lad rock didn’t let up for most of their set, which was perfectly fine by the DC9 crowd. Midway through the show, for debut album closer ‘Candlelight’ and ‘Turn the Clock’, frontman Kiaran Crook swapped his electric guitar for an acoustic for the slower tempoed numbers. The introspective moments didn’t last long, which was probably a good thing. ‘Heart of Gold’ and its sweeping “oh oh ohhhs” was a set standout, as was booming title track ‘Live for the Moment. They reminded everyone what the Sherlocks are here for: catchy, loud, quickly played rock. We’ll have to see where their music goes next. For more here on TGTF on The Sherlocks, go here.

The Sherlocks / September 2017 UK Tour

Editor’s note: Ahead of their debut album ‘Live for the Moment’, I noticed that since this original post in May, they’ve added shows in Manchester (bumping a previously announced date in Nottingham forward a day) and Sheffield (well duh, makes sense), so I’ve added them to the list of dates below.

Sheffield alt-rock quartet The Sherlocks have made plans to follow up their busy summer festival schedule with a headline tour of the UK in September. The band’s debut LP ‘Live for the Moment’ is due out on the 18th of August and features the single ‘Chasing Shadows’. At the bottom of the page, below the tour date listing, you’ll find the promo video for ‘Chasing Shadows’, which was filmed at live gigs in Manchester and Sheffield earlier this year.

Reading 2016: Friday Roundup

It’s that time of year again, when British youths have their GCSE results and they all descend upon either the city of Reading, or its Northern counterpart for this weekend, Leeds. Reading and Leeds festivals are a coming of age experience for the UK’s youth, and they use this opportunity to let go. Luckily for them, Reading and Leeds always have a lineup that fits this criteria, and this year is no different.

The Friday at Reading was opened by Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls on the main stage, which is the perfect way to kick off any festival. No-one encapsulates what a festival atmosphere should sound like more so than Turner, with his acoustic blend of heartfelt tales and punk rock ethos. The shining sun only cemented this feeling and for the rest of the day.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes once again proved that festivals really are their thing. Being the first time he’d come to play the main stage at Reading, Carter made sure to make the most of this opportunity by making his way into the crowd, then leading around over 100 members of the audience on a chase around the sound desk and back again. Carter is never one to disappoint, and he did more than deliver this time.

Over on the Festival Republic stage, The Sherlocks and their soon-to-be tour mates Blaenavon both delivered fantastic sets that were met with great reception by the packed out tent, both revelling in the afternoon crowds’ welcome. At the same time, grime supergroup Boy Better Know were on the main stage proving why grime is currently one of the UK’s most promising and domineering genres. Flames included.

CHVRCHES took to the main stage as the sun began to set, and their performance could not have gone on at a more apt moment. Being the third time the band had played the festival, yet the first time on the “big boy/girl stage” as singer Lauren Mayberry put it, it was a moment that was enjoyed and surely to be remembered by both fans and band. The crowd by this point were fully into their weekend fun, so the reception CHVRCHES got was joyous and enthralled. Their early single ‘The Mother We Share’ ended the set on a particularly highest of highs.

Continuing the main stage festivities, Disclosure absolutely dominated the capacity crowd, drawing the largest crowd of the day so far. With a set filled with floor fillers and anthems, they were the perfect warm-up for what was to come from co-headliners Foals. At the same time, at The Pit tent, American rockers Thrice gave a performance that was heartfelt and connected with the modest audience like no other did during all Friday.

Being the Reading leg of the twin festivals, Foals were the final headliner on the first night. Even before they took to the stage, this was bound to be a momentous occasion for the Oxfordians, surely an act you should simply not miss out on when given the chance. It’s worth noting that Sunday’s co-headliners at Reading were Biffy Clyro, who first made their way to the upper echelons of the lineup back in 2013, proving that it’s not a feat that happens just once. Foals debut Reading headline slot not only delivered, but completely proved they’ve rightly earned their place as top billing at one of the countries most sought after slots.

From their early position as indie newcomers with their debut ‘Antidotes’ back in 2008 to now headlining Reading festival, Foals have been on a continuous meteoric rise. A set that included ‘Cassius’, a rare treat in their UK headline set after being removed from constant rotation back in 2010, along with fan favourites ‘Inhaler’ and ‘What Went Down’, it was a moment in history for the Foals timeline, and they made sure that it was remembered that way. Ending with ‘Two Steps, Twice’, for which co-headliners Disclosure also made an appearance, along with pyrotechnics, crowd surfing and fans’ complete devotion, this was Foals’ moment. They seized it, ran with it, and now the future is theirs. In the now immortalised words of frontman Yannis Phillippakis, it was “pretty fucking magic”.

 

Dot to Dot Festival 2016 in Nottingham (Part 2)

I’d heard a little bit about Rat Boy (pictured above) before the festival, mostly in comparison to Jamie T. After taking a break following EKKAH’s performance, and waiting for The Rubens to start, I decided to head into Rock City’s main stage to see what the hype was about. What I found was a frenetic crowd, evidently having the time of their lives, and I discovered that the Jamie T comparisons weren’t too far off. Rat Boy’s performance was raw and charged, with his music drawing together all manner of influences from hip-hop to punk. For someone so young, he’s managed to amass an impressive number of animated fans.

Catching The Rubens meant a trip down to the Rock City Basement, one of my favourite rooms that I visited due to the lofty ceilings and coolness of the air. The Rubens had travelled all the way from Australia and seemed pretty amazed when they found out that there were no Aussies in the considerable Dot to Dot audience. They seemed to genuinely love being up on stage, playing a number of their indie-bluesy tracks, including their popular single ‘Hoops’.

I arrived early at The Bodega, where I was planning on watching the start of Palace Winter’s set. As I arrived, Girl Friend were just finishing up in the packed out bar, and I felt a little disappointed that I hadn’t made it sooner to catch more of their energetic set. I headed upstairs to watch Palace Winter play in front of a moderately-sized crowd. Their melodic, balmy indie synth style was atmospheric and engaging, and I would have been happy to stick around for the full set, but I only ended up sticking around for the first three tracks.

As I wandered back across town, the plan was to see The Sherlocks next, where they were playing at the Rescue Rooms’ Subculture Live Stage. Despite being from my hometown, I’ve never the band play live, and I was looking forward to getting a chance to finally see them in action at Dot to Dot. By the time I arrived, however, the room was packed out and I popped my head through the door but couldn’t get close enough without getting bashed every time someone came into the room. It was a shame I couldn’t get in to see them, but a great sign for the band and their increasing popularity.

After deciding that I’d be unable to get a decent spot for The Sherlocks, I headed to Rock City’s main stage to watch Mystery Jets. I’d recently caught the band for about 15 minutes at Live at Leeds, so was very excited at the prospect of seeing them for a little longer this time around. They played a balanced mix of old and new songs, including the older ‘Serotonin’, ‘Elizabeth’, the newer ‘Blood Red Balloon’ from current album ‘Curve of the Earth’, and of course, the classics ‘Young Love’ and ‘Two Doors Down’. There were points during the set when the crowd, who had been in incredibly high spirits throughout the entire set, were jumping up and down so enthusiastically that I could feel the floor move beneath my feet, which were incidentally stuck firmly to the sticky floorboards. It was a great atmosphere to be a part of.

I left about 15 minutes before the end of the set, and headed back into the Red Room of Rescue Rooms to watch the last band on my schedule for the day, King No-One. When I arrived the band were in full swing and lead singer Zach Lount was twirling the microphone stand across his shoulder, evidently having a great time. The band’s star-spangled indie rock sound translated very well to their live performance; fans of their music should definitely check them out in the flesh if possible. The set ended with Lount firing a confetti cannon into the cloud, which was a fitting end to a great day.

Pretty much every band that I saw during the day was a perfect example of why, whilst music sounds great on Spotify or on your record player, you just can’t beat it live. Dot to Dot is a great example of how you don’t always have to travel across the country for the big festivals to have a truly great experience. There’s so much going on in your own city or neighbouring ones that you might not aware of. It’s really worth supporting these smaller city events because we’ll bet you’ll find more than a few new favourite indie bands to follow.

 

Dot to Dot Festival 2016: writer Rebecca’s best band bets

Dot to Dot Festival 2016 will see a number of new and established acts descend on the cities of Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham during the second May bank holiday (27-29 May). The festival will be in each city for 1 day only and will showcase a number of the best acts from the surrounding area, as well as the likes of big names like Mystery Jets, The Temper Trap and Augustines who will play at each city over the weekend. I honestly found it tough picking out just a selection to recommend ahead of the festival, but here are some acts (in alphabetical order, mind) to catch if you find yourself heading to Dot to Dot:

Ardyn
Ardyn are a brother and sister duo from Gloucestershire whose atmospheric pop is otherworldly, with singer Katy Pearson showcasing her powerful vocals on the newest release ‘Over the River’. Their previous stuff is gentler and more stripped back, but no less impressive. They’re sure to be an act to catch.

Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers
With an unusual, old-world sound that feels more suited to bluegrass era, Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers is the touring name given to the folk singer/songwriter from Canada and his band. Caplan released his second album last year, ‘Birds With Broken Wings’, and will be touring throughout the summer in North America and Europe. With his eccentric look and his throaty drawl, Caplan is described as “a madman and an earnest poet” on his Web site. Sounds like the recipe for a fascinating performer.

EKKAH
EKKAH are Rebecca and Rebekah, a funky disco-pop duo from Birmingham. Their track ‘Last Chance to Dance’ feels a bit like Haim and Jamiroquai were merged together in some bizarre but highly successful experiment. They released single ‘Small Talk’ earlier this year, a bright, glittering synthpop number that is well worth a listen.

Haus
Haus are a five-piece from London with an indie-synth sound, citing rock, hip-hop and electronic influences. They released two singles in 2015, ‘Haze’ and ‘Blinded’, and have a number of festival dates across the UK this summer, in addition to Dot to Dot.

Into the Ark
Into the Ark are for those that prefer something a little softer, with gently strumming acoustic guitars and soulful vocals. From south Wales, the singer/songwriter pair met through their love music and have an EP scheduled for release in August. Their debut ‘Right Track’ gives you a taste of what they have to offer.

King No-One
In a similar vein to Haus, King No-One are an indie rock group but from the North (York). Their music is bold, glitzy and punchy. The Northern group’s latest single ‘Stay Close’ has an addictive rhythm and is a great indie summer tune. The song also features an interesting break towards the end (with a pithy monologue!), before returning to the chorus once more.

Palace Winter
Palace Winter are a synthpop duo from Copenhagen, whose latest single ‘H. W. Running’ is atmospheric and smooth, with a momentum layered with a pleasing synth composition: it’s very easy to get into and I can imagine it being a good accompaniment for a morning jog or a late night at the club.

The Rubens
The blues-rock band The Rubens have been around since 2011 and are signed to Ivy League Records back home in Australia. The band have a following on their native continent but will be appearing at both The Great Escape and Dot to Dot halfway across the world to share their music. The band released their second album ‘Hoops’ last year, and they released their third single from the album, ‘Hold Me Back’, earlier this year.

The Sherlocks are a Northern foursome, who have recently been travelling further afield after building a loyal home support around Sheffield. Their latest single ‘Last Night’ is a punchy indie tune with a catchy chorus and guitar hooks aplenty!

Will Joseph Cook
Will Joseph Cook is a fresh-sounding singer whose single ‘Girls Like Me’ has an upbeat feeling that is positively contagious. From Tunbridge Wells, the singer is gaining momentum with a couple of his songs reaching a couple of million plays on Spotify. If you’re a fan of upbeat, sunshine pop that begs to be danced along to, Will Joseph Cook might be the one for you.

Live at Leeds 2016 Preview: editor Mary’s best band bets

Atlantic Shore

In the mood for sparkling, upbeat synth rock? This quartet with ties to nearly all of the great Northern towns (Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester) will start your day at Live at Leeds on an energetic note. Check out Atlantic Shore’s latest single, ‘The Comedown’, which was released last month.

Atlantic Shore are set to perform at the Faversham at 12:30 PM.

The Jackobins

Staying in th’ North (this festival is in Yorkshire, am I right?), turn your attention to music of a harder edge. Forget Manchester for a moment: The Jackobins’ ‘Waiting on the Sun’ will remind you of Oasis in the brashness of their anthemic rock.

The Jackobins perform at Leeds Beckett Uni Union Stage 2 at 1 PM. (Incidentally, Plaitum – who Rebecca introduced you all to when they received a shout for SXSW 2016 – will be playing at the same time of day at Headrow House.)

The Velveteens

Let’s not kid ourselves, surf rock came back, so what’s to stop the other trends of past decades returning? Co-ed group from Leeds The Velveteens will be leading the charge when the revolution comes. ‘Simply Plain Mary Jane’? Hardly!

The Velveteens play at the Brudenell Social Club’s Games Room at 2:30 PM.

Demob Happy

From Leeds, you can either go north to Newcastle or south all the way to the coast to Brighton for Demob Happy. As a science boffin by (day) trade, I am more than a little amused they’ve got a song called ‘Junk DNA’. “Gene Manipulator” should have been my nickname in uni. Make of that what you will… And we could all use a little bliss, eh?

Demob Happy are scheduled to play at the Brudenell Social Club’s main stage at 3:00 PM, which make them a nice follow-up after The Velveteens.

Xylaroo

Cover me, folks, I’m going into Carrie’s usual bailiwick and into the singer/songwriter den. A girl duo signed to Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label, Xylaroo have done a fantastic acoustic treatment to cover of Arctic Monkeys’ ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor’, turning a song I don’t even like to a palatable one (!), so suffice to say, I’m looking forward to their debut album ‘Sweetooth’ (not a typo) out the 3rd of June, which includes ‘Sunshine’.

So if singer/songwriter-y, harmonising type music is more your thing, you can catch Xylaroo at Leeds College of Music Recital Room at 3 PM.

Girl Friend

Okay, I’m outta there and back to my specialty and having gone on to another duo. Girl Friend, a girl/boy pair from Manchester (seriously, where else would they have been from? ha), do clean, crisp electropop that’s music to my ears and heart, not to mention my feet. Check out the fab ‘Nocturnal’.

Girl Friend will play the Belgrave Music Hall at 4 PM.

Jones

Jones has the kind of voice music producers clamour over: soulful, rich, strong. Her voice lend well to both electronic/urban pop and acoustic treatments. Judging from her collaboration with TGTF friends Honne on their track ‘No Place Like Home’, she’ll be a sought-after vocal talent for years to come.

Jones is set to perform at the Wardrobe at 7:00 PM.

Catholic Action

Ready to do some hand clapping in my favourite venue in all of Leeds? Then you’re definitely ready to have some fun with Catholic Action and fall in ‘L.U.V.’ with this band from Glasgow. We have!

Catholic Action will appear at Nation of Shopkeepers at 8:00 PM.

Anteros

Staying in the pop realm, we arrive at London’s Anteros. Their sci-fi name makes them sound like they’re from another planet. However, to our benefit, they’re just writing really great pop songs. Have some ‘Breakfast’ with them below.

Anteros perform at the Brudenell Social Club’s Games Room at 9:30 PM.

Fatherson

I’ve been a fan of these Scots and their uplifting, swooning anthems since I saw them in Edinburgh 2 years ago. And it’s a great time for them to appear at Live at Leeds, as they’ve just released their newest single, ‘Just the Point of Breaking’.

Fatherson appear at Leeds Beckett Uni Union Stage 2 at 9:30 PM.
