It’s our job here at There Goes The Fear to bring you the inside knowledge on upcoming artists and awesome new music. But, someone help us out – who the frak are Silver Columns? Because right now, nobody, not even music bloggers like myself, know anything beyond the fact they’re an electro duo. Seriously! Head to their MySpace page. Next to ‘members’, all you shall find is a mere “??”. However, I do like a gimmick, and this frivolous anonymity they’ve decided to adopt only makes the couple’s digital pop all the more intriguing to the ear.
We’ve managed to grab a 5 track demo from these mysterious Banksy’s of the electro world. Expect heart-racing, big fish little fish card board box beats resounding from track to track, with a side order of suave vocals for that extra layer of spell bounding quality. The hypnotic Warm Welcome, for example, has surprisingly touching, humane vox, which ultimately lead nicely into the contrastingly robotic convulsion of noise towards the end. Cavalier’s synths are similarly zany (think Sonic the Hedgehog on speed), while the jagged Heart Murmur proves to be a trancier, near ballad number, with an undoubted under bubbling of glacier beauty (Hey! Do you catch a Scottish accent in their vocals? *Notes down clue*). Always On’s delayed singing and digital squiggles are too, v. trippy, while Brow Beaten’s repetitive hook is an indie-Ibiza winner – the falsetto vocals showing a particularly tender, near soulful side to the zapping beats.
These guys’ (presuming they are males of course) digitalised music is, admittedly, very entrancing to me and yes, yes I am fan. If you, too, like your Simian Mobile Disco and your Hot Chip, you should check out Silver Columns, since they’re definitely on a par with this crowd, just, minus, you know, identities and stuff. Hit their (noticeably bare) MySpace page now.
