Video of the Moment #2784: MGMT

By on Thursday, 8th February 2018 at 6:00 pm

MGMT are releasing a new album tomorrow. In usual fashion for them, which means that they’re acting unlike any other band currently active, they’ve released a fourth track from the forthcoming LP that you can get for free if you preorder it today. The video for ‘Me and Michael’ follows a premise all too familiar to some of music history’s heroes (or villains, depending on which side you’re on). In the video, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden trawl YouTube to steal a song from another band in the Philippines. What happens next is blowing it out of proportion on what usually happens in plagiarism cases, but at least MGMT made the accompanying video to the song trippy and entertaining, if silly. Watch it below. ‘Little Dark Age’, the follow-up to 2013’s ‘MGMT’, will be out tomorrow on Columbia Records. For more on MGTF here on TGTF, come through.

American synthpop band MGMT have unveiled a new teaser for their forthcoming LP, in the form of a promo video for ‘When You Die’, which is set to feature on the album. (It follows the song ‘Little Dark Age’, which made its first appearance back in October.) Musically speaking, the song is mildly quirky and twee, but those placid sonic elements offset lyrics that teeter on the verge of a murderous psychosis.

The visual treatment of ‘When You Die’, directed by Mike Burakoff and Hallie Cooper-Novack, is suitably hallucinogenic for such an unstable mental state. Along with a range of bizarre and colorful animated effects, the promo video features ‘Girls’ actor Alex Karpovsky as its necromantic protagonist, presumably to keep it current? MGMT’s new LP ‘Little Dark Age’ is due out early in 2018. TGTF’s previous coverage of MGMT is right back this way.

MGMT. Does the name even ring a bell? Or maybe more accurately, do we even care what the ‘Kids’ composers are doing on, a full decade on from ‘Oracular Spectacular’? Well, there’s been already over a 150,000 views of their newest music video, so odds are that the general people are just chomping at the bit for more from Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. Considering how much change and tumult the pop music scene has undergone since their debut, it should be interesting to see what they’ve come up with after 4 years since their self-titled album that was met with mixed reviews.

The first taster VanWyngarden and Goldwasser have given of their upcoming album, expected in early 2018, is the title track. The visuals accompanying ‘Little Dark Age’ are more than a little weird and surreal. But that’s what we’ve come to expect from MGMT, isn’t it? Have a go at the promo for ‘Little Dark Age’ below. The BBC at Glastonbury 2014 (Saturday): MGMT headlining the John Peel Stage with ‘Kids’

By on Sunday, 29th June 2014 at 8:00 pm

Wherever you will be hanging your hat this weekend, whether you’re joining the sheep at Worthy Farm or you’ve got your feet up in front of the telly, us here at TGTF will have you covered when it comes to Glastonbury 2014. The dedicated people they are, the folks at the BBC will be working all hours during the festival and feeding us live coverage as it becomes available. What does this mean for you? We’ll be passing along all the best bits to you, our faithful readers.

Ah yes, MGMT, the band we can blame for forcing every band since 2007 to think they need a synthesiser. It seems like ‘Oracular Spectacular’ was released just yesterday, doesn’t it? It’s kind of weird thinking about it now, that ‘Kids’ made its premiere 7 years ago. But the punters at Glasto 2014 were ready for it, as you will see from the video of MGMT’s headline set at the John Peel Stage Saturday below.

For more of the BBC’s Glastonbury coverage online, head this way. Stay tuned for more videos from Glasto 2014 right here on TGTF.
