Yes, you’re probably fed up of going on and on about Blog Off!? This Saturday night – Theregoesthefear’s first gig night at London’s Roundhouse with Victoria & Jacob, Jazica and Starlings all playing.

We were all geared up for Saturday night. Then a friend mentioned about the lack of between set entertainment, so rather than the classic “pop the ipod on shuffle” trick, we asked a few friends, dug around, called in a few favours and managed to blag the rather fantabulous Ou Est Le Swimming Pool to DJ between sets. Yes, that’s right, the same Ou Est Le Swimming Pool that finished in our top “10 for 2010″ poll last year. The same Ou Est Le Swimming Pool that are supporting La Roux in a few months. Oh yes.

So, if you’re at a loss as to what to do on Saturday night, why not pop down to Camden’s Roundhouse studios to catch some ace live music? doors are at 7:30pm on 20th March 2010 and tickets are on sale now for those of you that like a discount and planning ahead – they’re just £5 now and will be £6 on the door. Or, if you don’t fancy paying, you can win one of two pairs of tickets to the event here.

You can order your tickets now on the Roundhouse’s website, or join the Facebook event.

Bands to Watch #166: Victoria and Jacob

Bands to Watch #166: Victoria and Jacob

There Goes The Fear are so super duper excited to be hosting their first official gig this coming Saturday (March 20th), we could actually, explode… Blog Off! will be taking place at the Roundhouse studios in Camden Town, London. You can grab all the details, such as ticket prices and starting times here.

Among the act’s playing on the night include indie synth superstars, Starlings (who we first introduced earlier in the year), as well as infectious electro pioneers Jazica.

We’re are also proud to be featuring upcoming duo Victoria & Jacob, on the bill.

Hailing from London, Victoria & Jacob are a robotic pair, making glacier electro with an ice creamy edge. The slow paces of the tin-foil synths have an edge of drowsy melancholy to them. The fairytail, bouncy vocals meanwhile (which NME quite correctly compared to a drunken Joanna Newsom!) allow for a silky contrast, resulting in an atmospheric morse-code mass of sound which is both ambient as well as eclectic (listen out for the temper-fuelled screams of Megadeath, if you don’t believe the latter choice of word!).

And remember to check out Victoria & Jacob, as well as Jazica and Starlings, live at Blog Off! this coming Saturday at the Roundhouse Studios, London. It’ll be ace.

Blog off – Jazica and Starlings to play first TGTF gig night

Blog off – Jazica and Starlings to play first TGTF gig night

So, over the past few years There Goes The Fear has slowly grown and grown from nothing into a sprawling monster of music news and reviews. Seems there’s now over 15,000 of you that read us every month, so we thought “hmmm, why not meet some of you?!”. So with this in mind, we’re bringing three amazing new bands together for one night only so you can catch them in the flesh shortly before they have a stratospheric rise to fame and fortune.

It all takes place at London’s Roundhouse Studios in Camden on Saturday 20th March 2010.

First up will be the rather fantastic Victoria & Jacob who only came to our attention earlier this week. Needless to say we got right on the phone and booked them up to open the night up. Lo-fi electro pop duo Victoria & Jacob hail from London Town and make sweet sweet noise via the power of voice manipulation & synthetic sounds. Having already established themselves with BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, debut single “With No Certainty” is due for release on 5th April on Voga Parochia.

Following on their coat tails will be Southerners Jazica, who we caught supporting Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club last October. They’ve been championed by BBC Radio 2’s Steve Lamacq and BBC6 Music’s Tom Robinson, and quite honestly I can’t get enough of their music at the moment.

Closing things off will be one of Sheffield’s finest rising stars, Starlings (pictured left), who Jess introduced at the start of the year. Mixing beats, synths and strings to come up with electric gold floor fillers, Oxjam and BBC Radio Sheffield love them & you will see why.

So, what else do you need to know? Doors are at 7:30pm on 20th March 2010 and tickets are on sale now for those of you that like a discount and planning ahead – they’re just £5 now and will be £6 on the door.

You can order your tickets now on the Roundhouse’s website, or join the Facebook event.

As I’m sure you can work out, this is a massive undertaking, and all the complicated logistics are being sorted out by the (rather lovely) people at CIFD. They are the new generation of creative event & broadcast producers based at London City University and the iconic Camden Roundhouse. They’ve been given the opportunity to stage their own events in the Studio Theatre of the Roundhouse and in May will be taking it one step further by putting on a major live music event in the Main Space of the Roundhouse.

So, what are you waiting for? Go book your tickets, catch three ace bands and we’ll dance around or just jiggle bits. Yes.

Jazica – Boy

When we introduced Jazica yesterday, I hadn’t received the video for their single “Boy”, and so popped up the piece fully expecting the subsequent video to prove to be a bit, well, boring (let’s be honest, most music videos are – a four piece band stood looking moody whilst strumming). Instead I was greeted by this amazing hand-drawn technicolour explosion of an animation. If you weren’t hooked by Jazica yesterday, hopefully this will push you over the edge.

In the Post #41: Jazica – Illusions

In the Post #41: Jazica – Illusions

Jazica (side)I first came across Jazica when they opened for Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club last month, and now have managed to bag a copy of their maiden EP, Illusions.

Formed originally way back in 2007, they were originally a duo doing mainly acoustic based music, before discovering a MicroKorg and changing to a more electro sound with “Boy”. Now they’ve fully embraced synths and keys with tracks like “Arp Attack” being very reminiscent of Crystal Castles (but without crazy Alice). Sounding like a mish-mash of many great artists – CSS + Klaxons on “Illusions and “Boy”, Laura Marling on “Dreamer”, Massive Attack on “Flash Flash” – it’s like an eclectic mixing pot of aceness to my ears.

One of the strongest points about the EP is lead singer’s Frankie’s voice – vulnerable and full of the wide-eyed wonderment – like Jose Vanders, or Cassie from Skins if she was in a band. “Come, come, come stay over” she implores on opening track “Illusions”, and you can’t help but sit up and pay attention. However, it’s not all about Frankie – Chris Smallwood’s electro beats are a constantly changing smish-smash of sounds and feelings, taking you from midnight rave to 5am blues perfectly.

If you’re yearning for a bit of summer, Jazica’s maiden EP could be what you’re waiting for to tide you over ’till festival season 2010. Take a listen to “Boy” below.

Live Review: Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club at Southampton Joiners on 27th October 2009

Live Review: Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club at Southampton Joiners on 27th October 2009

Delphic (side)Kitsuné Maison is the cooler-than-thou French record label that has bought us the likes of Hot Chip, Fischerspooner, Simian Mobile Disco and more, so when they take some bands on tour I can’t help but sit up and pay attention. Tonight the tour rolled into Southampton’s superb Joiners with the marvellous Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club.

Jazica opened things up, sounding slightly like Crystal Castles if they were fronted by Cassie from Skins – Casio keyboards with wide eyed wonderment and sweetness. Very professional, full of fun for an opening act, and a great start of things.

Two Door Cinema Club ambled on, looking pretty nerdy. I must admit I judged them there and then, expecting to be sorely let down by them being too-cool-for-school, but they turned out to be just the shot in the arm that the pop industry needs. There are few comparisons I can draw – at moments at I thought they sounded like The Kooks or The Ting Tings, but in hindsight this is just insulting to the guys from Bangor, Northern Ireland. Synth happy and pop-tastic, “Something Good Can Work” sounds as fresh as a daisy even though it’s possibly their oldest song, whilst new single “I Can Talk” is quick and punchy, just calling out for summer 2010 festival sing-alongs and mass drunken hug-yer-mates moments. Watch this band as quite honestly they deserve huge things.

Though it was billed as a joint headline tour, there wasn’t really much doubt who the stars of the night who everyone had come to see were. Delphic ambled on after a lengthy 40 minute wait and blinded us with enough strobes to guide a 747 into land from a few miles away. Doubt was slower than expected which led me to think that possibly we were in for a lacklustre performance. However, slowly they got the audience on side, with a deafeningly blinding version of This Momentary which slowly morphed into a three-way drumming match. A number of new songs made appearances, morphing and changing into each other in a way that would make Simian Mobile Disco and M83 both wet their pants – intelligent party tunes. Who’d have thunk. Closing out just gone 11 with their biggest single, Counterpoint, it was nothing short of life affirming – hands in the air, hug a stranger sort of moment. Inspiring that they’re such a young band – if they carry on going this big we’ll have the next big thing.
