Bands to Watch #73: Lilofee

Lilofee (side)Most of the time here at TGTF we try to mainly feature UK artists. However every so often there’s a band or artist who just HAS to be featured. Lilofee is one of these bands. They’re from LA, but combine everything I love in bands – synths, a bit of darkness, a dash of memorable choruses and a sound that is different to everyone of their influences.

Imagine Ladytron meets the Knife, with a hint of Interpol, She Wants Revenge and New Order and you’re part way there. Add to this some mystery (the band are named after a German fairytale, and front woman Kimi Recor is renowned for her crazy stage prescense), and you have Lilofee. Interestingly, Kimi commented recently that she has “a hard time writing anything that isn’t fairy tales or poetry”, which does add another layer of depth to the already dark tunes.

The four piece hail from San Francisco and their debut album, The Only Years, has a great collection of sounds and variety of material on it – Lock and Key (available below for download) features about 3 memorable hooks – it could be one of the underground festival hits of the summer. Who could not love a chorus of: “Hey Mister, Hey Mister, I kissed your kid sister, what’chu gonna do?” and the opening verse of: “I’m part of generation sexually ambigious / all the girls kiss / all the girls and the boys don’t know what to do so they borrow our pants / and our shoes and our eyeliner too”. MIA eat your heart out – it’s 2009’s Paper Planes.

Download the track below and then keep an eye out for Lilofee coming to a town near you shortly hopefully.

Interpol announce new album

One of my favourite bands of the last few years, Interpol, announced on Wednesday that their new album “Our Love To Admire” will be launched on Monday 9th July (though expect it to leak mid June as it releases in Japan on 20th June).

A modern day Joy Division, yet more complex, morose and dark, Interpol have been one of the few “It” bands to stick around from their initial hype (unlike other bands like The Strokes, The Vines, and others similarly hyped).

I can’t wait for this, as their current two albums are simply, well, amazing. If you’ve never heard of them, take a listen, and if you have heard of them, listen again to them… and I’ve heard that live they’re just amazing. So check them out!

The tracklisting is apparently the following:

1 Pioneer to the Falls
2 No I in Threesome
3 The Scale
4 The Heinrich Maneuver
5 Mammoth
6 Pace Is the Trick
7 All Fired Up
8 Rest My Chemistry
9 Who Do You Think
10 Wrecking Ball
11 The Lighthouse

(though as I mentioned the other day, I never really see much point in putting a tracklisting up when we haven’t heard the songs.)
