Even I had a stuffed pink flamingo growing up. In case you didn’t know, there’s been this ongoing debate over whether pink-coloured clothing is appropriate specifically for girls. So it seems like the new song and video from Fizzy Blood from Leeds might have been fuelled by this debate. True to form, the Yorkshire band have come out with another punishing single, ‘Pink Magic’, which of course is the prevailing color in its accompanying promo video. What is unexpected is the number and types of pink things poured on or thrown at the band during the course of the video. Watch it below. In addition to summer festival appearances, the group have announced two headline shows in September: at home at the Brudenell Social Club on the 19th of September, followed by another show at London Boston Music Rooms on the 20th. Live at Leeds 2018 Preview: editor Mary’s best band bets (part 1)

This year’s Live at Leeds 2018 best bets preview will be longer than past years because a lot of the acts (more than in past years, I reckon!) will also appear at Liverpool Sound City or The Great Escape, or both. As a result, I listened to ever band on the Live at Leeds schedule, then cross-referenced the lists so you, the music discoverer, can find them at another event if applicable. The Great Escape will take place in Brighton in 2 weeks’ time, and I am planning to post a Great Escape-specific best bets that will pick up anyone exemplary that I wouldn’t have written about here if they aren’t appearing in Leeds. Apollo Junction (electropop; Leeds; 12:00 PM, Trinity stage)
This band from North Yorkshire have been knocking around for the last 6 years with their brand of electropop and somehow, I have only discovered them now. Precious little is available online about them but according to this article, they enjoy Yorkshire Tea and fat rascals at Betty’s, which wins them bonus points in my book. Check them out before an A&R stumbles on them and they get whisked off to bigger venues.

The Orielles (garage rock; Halifax; 12:00 PM, Holy Trinity Church, CLASH stage)
We’ve featured The Orielles over the last 5 years on TGTF, so you’re probably wondering why would I include them here. They released their debut album ‘Silver Dollar Moment’ in February on Heavenly Recordings, and the LP has received accolades, including from The Guardian (“this album is a masterclass in how to produce guitar music that feels anything but futile: by making it specific, strange and superior to much of what’s come before.”). We knew them before they was and now you can enjoy them as a special guest at Live at Leeds. NB: They will also be appearing at Liverpool Sound City later on Saturday at the District and The Great Escape in a fortnight’s time, performing twice on Thursday the 17th of May.

SHEAFS (rock; 1:00 PM, Hyde Park Social Club)
The River Sheaf flows through Sheffield, so I’d fathom a guess that this group of Sheffield Hallam University graduates named themselves after it. This is a band with that snotty punk attitude and muscular guitar rock to back it up. They’ve been selling out venues in the UK and across the Continent, and it seems this is merely the beginning for them. NB: They will be performing at The Great Escape Saturday night the 19th of May at Hope and Ruin.

Tors (folk; Devon; 1:00 PM, Chapel)
Changing gears to a more conventional singer/songwriter outfit, my ears happened upon Tors, a quartet from Devon who amIACre miles away from the region’s most famous musical export Muse. Equally adept at a cappella four-part harmony and sweeping, guitar-driven, folky soundscapes ala Fleet Foxes and Goldheart Assembly, they’re for those interested in a slower, yet richer musical experience. NB: Tors appear Friday night the 18th of May at St. Mary’s Church at The Great Escape.

The Snuts (rock; Whitburn, West Lothian; 2:15 PM, Key Club)
I imagine most bands from Scotland are asked if they are from Glasgow or Edinburgh. The Snuts are from Whitburn, West Lothian, smack dab in between the two. I reckon they must favour Glasgow, as they’ve named a song after it that’s already hit over 440,000 streams on Spotify. No wonder: they’ve got that feel good guitar rock vibe going that everyone loves. Well, most everyone, right?

Black Futures (rock / electronic; London; 3:15 PM, Key Club)
Love psych rock? Love electronic? Hate that the two genres are never together in one band? Fear no more. Black Futures from London are a duo that have somehow successfully melded the two, giving each its due. A band after my own heart. NB: Black Futures will appear at the Great Escape Thursday the 17th of May at Green Door Store.

Hollow Coves (folk; Brisbane, Australia; 4:00 PM, Leeds International Spiegeltent)
Folk duo Hollow Coves will be travelling quite a distance for Live at Leeds. They hail from the hometown of BIGSOUND, the picturesque Queensland port city of Brisbane. You can expect angelically beautiful harmonies from the acoustically inclined folk duo. NB: Hollow Coves will appear twice on Thursday the 17th of May at the Great Escape.

Knightstown (electronic; Brighton via Glasgow; 4:00 PM, Headrow House [NME stage])
In a previous life, Michael Aston was a freelance composer and the keyboardist in C Duncan’s live band. Over the last few years, he’s been making music of his own under the name Knightstown. Aston’s swirly, emotional falsetto vocals float over his electronic compositions, drawing him favourable comparisons to Jamie Woon. He’ll provide an atmospheric performance that will be in sharp contrast to most of the other performances in Leeds on Saturday. NB: He will perform Saturday the 19th of May at The Great Escape as part of the FatCat Records showcase.

The Indigo Project (indie rock; Leeds; 4:00 PM, Stylus [The Independent stage])
I always like a good local band getting the opportunity to showcase at the festival in their own hometown. The Indigo Project are also no strangers to Live at Leeds, having played the event last year. Jangly, bright guitar pop guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone’s face.

whenyoung (pop-punk; London via Limerick, Ireland; 4:00 PM, Brudenell Social Club [DIY stage])
Pop-punk may have been borne out of the Noughties, but it’s still alive and kicking. Female-fronted whenyoung, Irish transplants in the Capital, recall the peppiness of Avril Lavigne while sitting nicely alongside acts like Dream Wife and False Advertising. NB: whenyoung are scheduled to play at the Haunt on Thursday night the 17th of May at the Great Escape.

Lady Bird (punk; Kent; 4:15 PM, Key Club)
Slaves and Drenge got the party going on political punk a few years ago, and the UK has never looked back since. With IDLES and LIFE performing at back to back SXSWs the past 2 years, it seems likely that their buddies from the South East, Lady Bird, will get an invite to Austin soon enough. Signed to fellow Kent natives Slaves’ Girl Fight Records, their future in releasing the kind of informed punk they want is bright. NB: Lady Bird appear at the Great Escape twice on Friday the 18th of May.

Tremors (synthpop; UK/French band based in London; 4:30 PM, Brudenell Social Club Community Room [DIY Neu stage])
Tremors are two Englishmen and a Frenchman from Marseille who somehow came together with the notion that they were going to meld French electropop and New Wave and they were going to do it on their own. So far, they’ve only released a series of singles, including this year’s two heart-pumping tunes, ‘Technicolour’ and ‘Broken Glass’. As an unashamed fan of synthpop in all its guises, Tremors are a unique curiosity worth your time at Live at Leeds.

SXSW 2017: rock in its many wonderful forms at the British Music Embassy Thursday afternoon – 16th March 2017

I go through usually unexplainable cycles of change in my musical tastes. However, the impetus for the latest change, while really only reaffirming my long-held admiration for hard rock, has no doubt been the drastic political upheavals that have befallen Britain and America in the last 9 months. The vote in favour of Brexit and the election of Trump have made me feel we’re getting ever closer to the end of days. But rock, in its headbangingly perfect way, has provided a constructive, much needed outlet in which to vent my frustration and anger. At times, rock has provided temporary respite, a brief means of escape when things feel too soul crushing.

I don’t often get the opportunity to stay for an entire showcase at SXSW, but I made time in my schedule for Thursday afternoon at the British Music Embassy at SXSW 2017. Last year, Northern Powerhouse took over Latitude 30 with all Northern line-up of hard-rocking bands. The first band on this Thursday performed on that very showcase, though I missed them then because I was interviewing Craig Johnson of fellow Leeds group Autobahn outside.


Fizzy Blood, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

Now I was finally getting a chance to hear Fizzy Blood‘s ear-splitting, yet oddly melodic brand of in-your-face rock. Dressed like he was going to a Hawaiian luau, frontman Benji Inkley screamed into his microphone like it was no big deal. He told jokes in between their songs and sounded like a good friend of mine from Wakefield. Together with the unrelentingly booming instrumentation behind him, their set was blistering, yet oddly comforting. Somehow, I don’t think Carrie would have agreed with me, ha.


The Sandinistas, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

If I thought I would get a chance to catch my breath, I had another thing coming. Which was fine by me! Next up were the Sandinistas, from Tredegar, Wales. I had a good feeling from the answers their lead singer / guitarist Dan Hagerty gave to our SXSW 2017-flavoured Quickfire Questions that we were on the same wavelength. I wasn’t wrong; you can listen to my chat with him here. But back to their performance. Like Fizzy Blood before them, they were a good, stark reminder that despite the seeming need for pop bands to throw a synthesiser into the mix, all you really need sometimes are the basic band setup (a lead singer, guitars and drums) and well-written songs. Interestingly, they sound less like the Clash (look again at their band’s name, if you missed it) and more like The Libertines.


The Sandinistas, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

The challenge that some bands never manage to overcome is to truly connect with their fans. The Sandinistas, however, made engaging punters look easy by not only being very funny between their songs, but also explaining with a laugh where the inspiration of their songs came from. Hagerty may be happily married but he’s going to take an ex and the village bicycle down a peg, which works well in a room of guys who have been wronged by a woman or two. And they don’t mind taking down another supposedly happily married man, our President, and his trophy wife. “She’s so shallow!” shouts Hagerty and naturally, the crowd approves. Even Hagerty’s own wife can’t escape the same treatment: if he’s to be believed, their single ‘Ready to Blow’ is about the sexual frustration he had before they got together. And so a future hit song was born.

Chain of Flowers, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

From the valley to the big city: it was on to another Welsh band, Chain of Flowers. And with their own and different approach to rock: gothy post-punk to be more precise. The Cardiff group had the added benefit of having been in America before, touring our two coasts last summer with their eponymous debut album produced by New York City’s Ben Greenberg. Joshua Smith’s vocals, melancholic in the vein of tortured Ian Curtis and Robert Smith before him, were framed by a buzzy, washy wall of sound. ‘Nail Me to Your Cross’? Admittedly, it’s not for everyone but trust me, you know if you favour this kind of brooding kind of denseness to rock out to.


LIFE, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

From Wales, we were then returned back to the North to face some East Yorkshire ‘tude head on. Quite literally. Hull punks LIFE, eager to preview their debut album ‘Popular Music’ in America, came roaring out the gate with crashing guitars and drums. I’m not fond of punk where it’s loud all the time and there’s no semblance of melody. What’s the point of making loads of noise with no purpose? Mick Sanders has solved that problem with his melodic and memorable guitar lines that skirt pop sensibility.


LIFE, British Music Embassy, Thursday 16 March 2017

But if there was any question of this band’s intentions, his brother Mez Green comes through with his biting lyrics. This is a man you wouldn’t want to cross, the sneer on his face unmistakable as he calls out Tories he’d probably chase down with a baseball bat. Try as you might, but you can’t look away. There is something improbably charismatic about him, a Brett Anderson-like presence preening and twirling onstage, deadpanning about looking for ‘Rare Boots’ in the shopping stalls of Hull but with an acid tongue reminiscent of Mark E. Smith. Something tells me Green enjoys this juxtaposition, all while the rest of the band thunders behind him. LIFE hit out at Brexit in ‘Euromillions’ and win the crowd over, drawn in by their devil may care attitude and equally unruly nature. Good thing too, as they would return to the British Music Embassy Saturday to bid this year’s SXSW adieu. Listen to my interview with Mez and Mick after this set through here.

TGTF Guide to SXSW 2017: Northern England artists showcasing at this year’s SXSW

For so many years and continuing on to this day, the North of England has always been a hot bed for new musical talent. Today’s installment of the TGTF Guide to SXSW 2017. will introduce you to 12 acts from ‘oop norf’, some may you have already heard of or heard on the radio, some you may have not. Except where noted, the summaries below were written by our Northern Irish correspondent based in Derry, Adam McCourt, who also went to uni in Leeds. Please note: all information we bring you about SXSW 2017 is to the best of our knowledge when it posts and artists and bands scheduled to appear may be subject to change. To learn when your favourite artist is playing in Austin, we recommend you first consult the official SXSW schedule, then stop by the artist’s Facebook and official Web site for details of any non-official SXSW appearances.

All We Are – pop / Liverpool
Liverpudlian trio All We Are describe themselves on Facebook as “The Bee Gees on diazepam”. The description is not far off, as they showcase similarities in vocal textures and harmonies, but with more downtempo and wavy grooves. Although they are based in Liverpool, none of the members actually hail from there. Bassist Guro Gikling is from Norway, Rich O’Flynn from Ireland is on drums and Luis Santos from Brazil plays guitar, making them probably the most multinational band to attend SXSW from this side of the Atlantic. Their self-titled debut album, released back in 2015, is available now. FFO: Warpaint, Wild Beasts, Django Django [As of 21/2, this act is no longer listed on the SXSW Music Festival schedule.]

Autobahn – punk / Leeds
Five-piece post-punk outfit from Leeds, Autobahn are Northern and proud of it. From depressing song titles to their screechy guitar tones, Autobahn’s music depicts the gloomy industrialisation of Northern England almost perfectly. Autobahn’s debut album ‘Dissemble’ was released in the summer of 2015 and contains all of the above, as well as Johnson’s honest lyrics and droning vocal melodies. False Advertising – rock / Manchester
False Advertising (pictured at top) are a self-proclaimed “twisted power-grunge” trio from Manchester. The female-fronted band create a perfect blend of dreamy guitar melodies and equally light-hearted vocal melodies against fuzzy guitar tones and a driving rhythm section. Fronted by Jen Hingley on guitar and vocals, backed by Josh Sellers on bass and Chris Warr on drums, their self-titled debut album was released in September 2015, and an EP titled ‘Brainless’ followed in 2016. Findlay – blues / pop / London via Manchester
You can take the girl out of the North, but you can’t take the North out of the girl. Case in point: Natalie Rose Findlay, who goes by her surname just like fellow Mancunian-born Morrissey, doesn’t really give a monkey’s. We’ve seen her charismatic performances at festivals before, and we imagine her rough around the edges style, in line with the ever-burgeoning lo-fi rock scene both in America and the UK, will be just the ticket in Austin. Fizzy Blood – punk / Leeds
Since forming in 2014, Heavy rock five-piece from Leeds Fizzy Blood have made major strides with their huge in-your-face riffs, melodic vocal melodies and insanely energetic live shows. They released their debut EP ‘Feast’ on 22nd of June 2015 and have since amassed under their belt a vast number of international shows and tours alongside acts such as Allusondrugs, Sun Club, The Virginmarys and punk icons The Dead Kennedys, as well as appearing at top UK festivals Download, Live at Leeds and Sound City. Her’s – pop / Liverpool
Outsiders from outsider towns, Stephen Fitzpatrick from Barrow in Furness and Audun Laading from Kristiansand, Norway, met whilst at university in Liverpool. They instantly connected over a “love of peculiar, sardonic humour and wide eyed observations”, according to their Facebook bio. Hmm. Any way you slice it, the duo present a loveable blend of dream pop that seems to transport any listener to the seaside towns from which they individually hail from. FFO: Mac Demarco, Beach Boys

LIFE – punk / Hull
Considering all the crap that’s happening in the world today, sometimes you need a release valve. You need music you can listen to, to get your aggressions out. LIFE, hailing from the East Yorkshire riverside town whose most famous musical export has been The Housemartins, are clearly here to put Hull back on the British rock map. Incisive lyrics backed by punishing rock guitars? Yes, please. Oh, and if you needed any convincing, they also wrote a protest song unveiled on the day of that Cheeto’s inauguration. Check. Menace Beach – alt-rock / Leeds
Menace Beach are an alt-rock act from Leeds, mainly made up of core members Ryan Needham and Liza Violet; the rest is somewhat of a revolving line-up. Menace Beach’s debut album ‘Ratworld’ was released in January 2015, which was followed up by the ‘Super Transporterreum’ EP in the same year and last month’s ‘Lemon Memory’, reviewed by our Rebecca here. She Drew the Gun – singer/songwriter / The Wirral
From the banks of the Mersey in a small peninsula called The Wirral is where fuzz pop four-piece She Drew the Gun reside. Formed and fronted by singer/songwriter Louisa Roach, the band offer dark, fuzz-filled pop topped with delightful and emotive vocals. She Drew the Gun have received continuous support from BBC Radio 6 Music after their debut album ‘Memories of the Future’ was named ‘Album of the Day’ upon its release last April 2016. Trudy and the Romance – pop / Liverpool
This Liverpool trio were formerly known as simply ‘Trudy’ and ‘Trudy Sings The Blues’ before settling on the poetic Trudy and the Romance. Oliver Taylor (vocals/guitar), Lewis Rollinson (bass) and Brad Mullins (drums) together produce raucous, guitar-driven indie pop with Hollywood-tinged vocal melodies that will simultaneously tug on the heartstrings and tap on the funny bone. VANT – protest rock/punk / London via Seaham
London via Seaham band VANT have been slaving away in the industry since their formation in 2014. The protest rock group, led by Mattie Vant, have garnered attention after appearing as support for Royal Blood, as well as touring with DIY Magazine’s NEU tour. They’ve already hit a dizzying array of festivals, including Dot to Dot, Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, 2000 Trees and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, as well as racked up plays of their numerous singles anointed as Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’. The Vryll Society – rock / Liverpool
Expect the unexpected from The Vryll Society. With a sound that touches on different facets of classic, psychedelic and prog rock, the Liverpudlian quintet present a body of work sure to keep any listener on their toes. Fuzz-infused rock led mainly by the rhythm section of Lloyd Shearer on bass and Benjamin Robinson on drums with lots of decorative guitar flourishes from Ryan Ellis and Lewis McGuinness, all topped by Michael Ellis’ catchy, melodic vocals, The Vryll Society stimulate both the mind and soul with their music. TGTF Guide to SXSW 2016: Clash in association with PPL, and NME in association with UK Trade and Investment at the British Music Embassy – 18th-19th March 2016

The British Music Embassy will return to Latitude 30 at 512 San Jacinto Boulevard, right by the heart of the action off 6th Street during SXSW 2016. On Monday and Wednesday, our editor Mary previewed the talent on show on Tuesday night (Huw Stephens with PRS for Music showcase) and Wednesday, then Thursday (Output Belfast and PIAS in association with AIM), respectively. This year’s showcases on Friday the 18th of March are set to include a host of artists from around the UK, including hotly-tipped acts from Wales and Scotland. The Welsh artists will be highlighted during the daytime show, presented by British Music @ SXSW in association with Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales. A pair of Scottish acts will feature on the evening showcase, presented by UK pop culture magazine Clash in association with music rights and licensing agency PPL.

The Friday afternoon show will feature a delightfully rich lineup of female artists, beginning with alt-folk singer/songwriter Rozi Plain and continuing with two Welsh acts, pop singer/songwriter Violet Skies and electronic musician Gwenno. Both Welsh women will be introduced in more detail in editor Mary’s upcoming preview of Welsh artists at SXSW 2016 later today.

Closing out the afternoon are two alliterative acts, our recent Band to Watch #372 Fickle Friends, followed by fellow TGTF alumnae Stealing Sheep. Fickle Friends vaulted to popularity in the UK with their debut single ‘Swim’ back in 2014 and have been on an upward trajectory ever since. Liverpool trio Stealing Sheep are sailing strong on their April 2015 release ‘Not Real’, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a hint of something new from them in Austin as well.

The Friday evening Clash showcase is set to begin with DJ/producer/all-around-Renaissance-woman Throwing Shade, whose soon-to-be released EP ‘House of Silk’ features the above reflection on pop culture and social media called ‘hashtag IRL’. Scottish pop songstress KLOE and avant/experimental trio Hælos will fill in the middle part of the evening lineup, ahead of a rather intriguing To Be Confirmed notation at 11 PM; bets are open as to who might fill that coveted slot.

Playing at midnight will be Glasgow electro musician The Revenge, followed by London-based soul pop duo Honne (read more of our coverage on Honne here). The Revenge will feature in our upcoming preview of Scottish artists at SXSW 2016, along with the aforementioned KLOE.

On Saturday, the 19th of March, the afternoon show at Latitude 30 will start with Sheffield slacker punk pair Nai Harvest (read more about them on TGTF here) and Leeds goth-punk band Autobahn. Falling square in the middle of the docket, Liverpool indie rockers Sugarmen are sure to win fans with their psychedelic recent single ‘Plastic Ocean’, while grunge rockers Fizzy Blood and Demob Happy finish off the daytime slate.

Latitude 30 will be taken over by recently retooled and relaunched pop culture magazine NME in association with UK Trade and Investment on Saturday night, the final event at the British Music Embassy for SXSW 2016. Leicester brothers Andy and James Stone, known onstage as synth-rock duo Lusts will open the show (Rebecca’s introduction to them is here), to be followed by rap collective Section Boyz. London five-piece Pumarosa have already announced an autumn 2016 support slot for SXSW 2015 hit act Gengahr and will feature in the middle of this final night lineup.

Deep-voiced Americana singer/songwriter Barns Courtney could easily follow in the successful SXSW footsteps of Hozier and James Bay before him. He’ll round out his trip to Austin with an appearance at the British Music Embassy, ahead of dance duo Formation (Rebecca’s introduction to them is here) and another tantalising to-be-announced special guest for the evening’s final set.
