Live Gig Video: Picture This share live performance video of single ‘One Drink’

By on Tuesday, 8th January 2019 at 4:00 pm

We first came across Picture This when previewing their appearance at SXSW 2017. They were part of the strong, annual Irish contingent to Austin, chatting to Carrie and appearing at the full Irish breakfast showcase at B.D. Riley’s. A lot has happened to the duo since. That year, they won an RTE Choice Music Prize award for Best Song for ‘Take My Hand’ and released their self-titled album that August. Next month, Picture This will be releasing their sophomore effort on Republic Records. ‘MDRN LV’, presumably pronounced ‘modern love’ but offered up in a more textspeak friendly format, will drop on the 15th of February, rather conveniently timed to be an appropriate post-Valentine’s gift, or perhaps a preorder ahead of Cupid’s big day.

‘One Drink’, the first single taken from the upcoming LP, has already made its mark on both the American Alternative and Hot Adult Contemporary charts. (For another taster, check out the promo for Everything or Nothing’.) With its inherent catchiness, it’s not hard to see or hear why. Last month while I was in hibernation, they revealed a live performance of the song, which I’ve wanted to share for a few weeks. For good measure, I am also including below the original promo video for the song, so completists can compare and contrast the two versions. Watch, enjoy and share how you like. They’re scheduled to go on tour on the Continent in early March, after which they will head to the UK for a string of shows. Following 5 nights (yes, really) at the 3Arena in Dublin at the end of March, the duo and their backing band will then embark on their first major North American tour in mid-April, which starts in Toronto on the 22nd; the tour concludes on the other side of the continent on the 18th of May in Seattle. Northern Irish art-rock singer/songwriter Joshua Burnside has recently announced a lengthy run of tour dates in England for the end of this year, as well as a pair of dates at home in Belfast to bookend the English dates. This tour is in preparation for Burnside’s upcoming EP release ‘Wear Bluebells In Your Hat If You’re Goin’ That Way’, which is a “reconstituted and embellished” deluxe version of his 2013 EP ‘If You’re Goin’ That Way’. The new EP is due out on the 11th of January 2019 via Quiet Arch. You can take a listen to its blues-tinged lead single ‘Black Dog Sin’ just below the tour date listing.

On 3rd December, Burnside will officially begin his University ‘Coffee House’ Tour, which includes, as you might expect, stops at University venues around England. Burnside will wrap up the tour with a show at Belfast Elmwood Hall just before Christmas on the 21st of December. Tickets for the following shows are available now. We’ve heard a rumour that currently Bristol-based singer/songwriter Luke Sital-Singh is about to uproot to decamp closer to TGTF Towers. (Well, okay, he’s moving to the other side of America but still, that feels closer to me, okay?) Tickets to the following four shows – one in the North of England, the rest in the South – are on sale now and listed below. He also has scheduled shows in Hamburg (the 17th) and Berlin (the 18th). In the Post #163: Ben Howard follows his ‘Noonday Dream’ with three new tracks, including a surprise collaboration with alt-pop duo Sylvan Esso

By on Tuesday, 25th September 2018 at 12:00 pm

Summer may be drawing to a close, but reminiscences of warm and sunny days are still fresh in our collective memory. With this in mind, singer/songwriter Ben Howard has just released a handful of new singles hot on the heels of his summer LP ‘Noonday Dream’, which was released back in June. As often happens, the recording sessions for the album were overly prolific, but in a fortunate sort of way. Howard himself says, “The recording sessions for ‘Noonday Dream’ were so varied and over quite a period of time. There were little gems that we didn’t know what to do with, but it felt right to put these three together, both separate and a part of the album, so to speak.”

One of those so-called gems is a surprise collaboration between Howard and American electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso. Called ‘Hot Heavy Summer’, the track does indeed feel tangentially related to the ephemeral vignettes on ‘Noonday Dream’. The addition of Amelia Meath’s backing vocals keeps the soundscape brighter and more buoyant than the title might imply, while the rounded hollow of the percussion beat lends a very definite substance to Howard’s otherwise evanescent arrangement. Apropos to the song’s title, ‘Hot Heavy Summer’ was featured as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World last Thursday, 13th September. Speaking on BBC Radio 1, Howard related that Meath’s lilting voice came immediately to mind for this song: “Amelia is just incredible, fortune prevailed, and we managed to get in the studio. I had it in the back of my mind as soon as we initially recorded ‘Hot Heavy Summer’ that the track just felt right for her.” If you’re interested in the full radio clip, you can listen back to it for a limited time on the BBC Radio 1 iPlayer.

‘Hot Heavy Summer’ is accompanied by two other tracks leftover from the ‘Noonday Dream’ sessions, a dark narrative called ‘Another Friday Night’ and the electronically experimental ‘Sister’. While these tracks don’t quite fit into the artistically cinematic nature of ‘Noonday Dream’, Howard is right in saying that they’re too good to go unheard. You can take a listen to all three tracks via Spotify, just below.

8.5/10

Ben Howard has a run of live dates in the UK planned for this winter, including two nights at the Manchester Apollo in December and three nights at London’s Brixton Academy after the start of the new year. Tickets for the following shows are available now.

Friday 7th December – Glasgow Hydro Arena
Saturday 8th December – Cardiff Motorpoint Arena
Monday 10th December – Manchester Apollo
Tuesday 11th December – Manchester Apollo
