Live Gig Video: Bob Dylan performs ‘The Night We Called It a Day’ on penultimate Late Show with David Letterman

By on Wednesday, 20th May 2015 at 4:00 pm

Tonight will be the last broadcast ever of the Late Show with David Letterman, whose show has been graced by the likes of acts we’ve covered here on TGTF including Glass Animals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Hozier, Real Estate and Arctic Monkeys, just to name a few. To many of us, especially those of us on the overworked, neurotic East Coast of America, Letterman was who we chose to while our late night hours with, have a laugh with and check out which band he’d have as a guest.

When has Bob Dylan not been difficult and crochety? I guess even the end of a major era in American late night telly didn’t sway the ageing singer/songwriter legend from changing his usual ways, as he appeared on Letterman’s show last night, confusingly not playing any one of his many personally penned hits but instead choosing to perform ‘The Night We Called It a Day’, an old standard that appears on Dylan’s new Frank Sinatra tribute album ‘Shadows in the Night’. Anyway, just watch it below and be amused as much with the ending as I was.

The BBC at Glastonbury 2014 (Saturday): Midlake cover Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’ at the BBC Music Tepee

By on Sunday, 29th June 2014 at 1:00 am

Wherever you will be hanging your hat this weekend, whether you’re joining the sheep at Worthy Farm or you’ve got your feet up in front of the telly, us here at TGTF will have you covered when it comes to Glastonbury 2014. The dedicated people they are, the folks at the BBC will be working all hours during the festival and feeding us live coverage as it becomes available. What does this mean for you? We’ll be passing along all the best bits to you, our faithful readers.

It’s past midnight now and it’s time to chillax. The acoustic style of Midlake, who TGTF caught in April supporting Neil Finn, suits the aesthetics of the BBC Music Tepee to a T. So it makes perfect sense that their three-piece setup would stop by there Saturday before their appearance on the Other Stage. This special acoustic performance is their cover of Bob Dylan‘s ‘I Shall Be Released’. Watch it below. Then get some rest, because we’ll be up and at ’em early tomorrow morning with more videos!

For more of the BBC’s Glastonbury coverage online, head this way. Stay tuned for more videos from Glasto 2014 right here on TGTF.

Video of the Moment #1302: Bob Dylan

‘Pretty Saro’ is a Bob Dylan song from his March 1970 sessions for his ‘Self Portrait’ album, and it never saw the light of day. Until now. A box set is due out soon will include this song, along with 34 demos, live cuts and alternate takes from that time. Have to say, this older era of Dylan sure beats the more recent ‘Duquesne Whistle’ era! Watch the atmospherically back in time video for ‘Pretty Saro’ below.

Glen Campbell sang about the ‘Wichita Linesman’, and now Bob Dylan is singing about a ‘Duquesne Whistle’. When it was up for discussion in last week’s Roundtable, I couldn’t help but laugh. Dylan doing something entirely unserious for once? Watch and listen below and let us know what you think in the comments.
