MTV Gonzo this week: Plan B

MTV Gonzo this week: Plan B

MTV Gonzo has been back for its new series for a couple of weeks now, but tomorrow’s episode is the one that I’m most excited about so far – Plan B. Not usually my cup of tea at all, but I will admit freely that I’ve fallen in love with the six tracks I’ve heard of his new album “The Defamation Of Strickland Banks”.

Plan B (or Ben Drew to his Mum) has gone all soulboy on us, having the sort of influences that you’d get from listening to daytime radio on Magic in the mid 90’s. Apparently in the interview he claims his new album is “like Glee with bollocks”, which sounds like just my sort of music, and an interview that should be funny. He’ll also be chatting to Zane Lowe on the brown couch and doing an acoustic performance of new single ‘She Said’ – watch the official video here (featuring Effy from Skins).

Joining Zane for the second dose of brown-love (get your mind out of the gutter!) will be Kids in Glass Houses from the Valleys of South Wales. The pop-punkers reveal which member of the band can be found on YouTube crowd surfing at a Glassjaw gig, and explain which song guitarist Iain wrote in his bedroom in his underpants.

Meanwhile, the Gonzo Report comes from youtube phenomenon Midnight Beast. Admittedly, when I saw that name I was like “errrr, who?!”, but it turns out they do the sort of well-honed parodies that you’d be stupid to not find funny. Watch this version of Ke$ha’s Tik Tok to get a feel for how great they’ll be.

You can catch this episode of Gonzo tomorrow, Tuesday 16th March 2010 at 10pm on MTV Rocks (formerly MTV 2), or find out more on Gonzo’s website and get involved on Gonzo’s Twitter.

I’ve slowly fallen in love with Oxford’s Stornoway over the past year. Jess first introduced them, and then I caught them live and interviewed them at Swindon’s Big Weekend last May. Now they’re gearing up to release their debut album ‘Beachcomber’s Windowsill’ on 24th May, and this is the (rather ace) video to accompny the first single.

Watch, enjoy, and have an amazing weekend. We’ll be back on Monday.

(PS: Looking for something to spend some money on this weekend?! Buy yourself a Blog Off! Ticket – they’re rapidly selling out, and it’d be ace to see you there – they’re only £5 in advance, and you get to see the aceness of Starlings, Jazica and Victoria and Jacob. What are you waiting for? Go book yourself a ticket or get more info here)

Blog off – Jazica and Starlings to play first TGTF gig night

Blog off – Jazica and Starlings to play first TGTF gig night

So, over the past few years There Goes The Fear has slowly grown and grown from nothing into a sprawling monster of music news and reviews. Seems there’s now over 15,000 of you that read us every month, so we thought “hmmm, why not meet some of you?!”. So with this in mind, we’re bringing three amazing new bands together for one night only so you can catch them in the flesh shortly before they have a stratospheric rise to fame and fortune.

It all takes place at London’s Roundhouse Studios in Camden on Saturday 20th March 2010.

First up will be the rather fantastic Victoria & Jacob who only came to our attention earlier this week. Needless to say we got right on the phone and booked them up to open the night up. Lo-fi electro pop duo Victoria & Jacob hail from London Town and make sweet sweet noise via the power of voice manipulation & synthetic sounds. Having already established themselves with BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, debut single “With No Certainty” is due for release on 5th April on Voga Parochia.

Following on their coat tails will be Southerners Jazica, who we caught supporting Delphic and Two Door Cinema Club last October. They’ve been championed by BBC Radio 2’s Steve Lamacq and BBC6 Music’s Tom Robinson, and quite honestly I can’t get enough of their music at the moment.

Closing things off will be one of Sheffield’s finest rising stars, Starlings (pictured left), who Jess introduced at the start of the year. Mixing beats, synths and strings to come up with electric gold floor fillers, Oxjam and BBC Radio Sheffield love them & you will see why.

So, what else do you need to know? Doors are at 7:30pm on 20th March 2010 and tickets are on sale now for those of you that like a discount and planning ahead – they’re just £5 now and will be £6 on the door.

You can order your tickets now on the Roundhouse’s website, or join the Facebook event.

As I’m sure you can work out, this is a massive undertaking, and all the complicated logistics are being sorted out by the (rather lovely) people at CIFD. They are the new generation of creative event & broadcast producers based at London City University and the iconic Camden Roundhouse. They’ve been given the opportunity to stage their own events in the Studio Theatre of the Roundhouse and in May will be taking it one step further by putting on a major live music event in the Main Space of the Roundhouse.

So, what are you waiting for? Go book your tickets, catch three ace bands and we’ll dance around or just jiggle bits. Yes.

Now they’ve released their debut album, Unicorn, and this is an acetrack off of that album. Listen and enjoy.

Apparatjik are a new super-band that have slowly seeped into my consciousness over this past few weeks. Made up of Guy Berryman from Coldplay, Jonas from Mew, Magnus from Aha and producer Martin Terefe, they’re making the sort of beautifully strange stuff I’ve come to love from Mew, mixed with the mainstream appeal of Coldplay and Aha. Apparently we have an album on the way, which I’m pant-wettingly excited about.

In the mean time I don’t have much to share other than this bit of live footage from a recent performance at the Berlin Club Transmediale festival. Watch and enjoy.

If you’re a fan of MGMT, 60’s psychedelia, lots of feedback, Lo-fi hazy stuff to get high to, this track could well be a favourite of yours. Girls are releasing their third single “Morning Light”, and we’ve been given the all-clear to give the B-side away. The band covered Skeeter Davis’ “The End Of The World”:
