We don’t normally post covers in the daily VOTM feature, but I wanted to make an exception given the current political climate. The Kills decided to take American rapper Saul Williams’ ‘List of Demands (Repatriations)’ and reinvent into an anthem for modern day. Alison Mosshart says of the tune, “It’s a song of strength and empowerment, rooted in the idea of rising above. It was one of those songs you’re almost scared to cover, because it carries so much respect. It wasn’t a straight up love song or a drug song. It was defined, serious, and perfect already. With certain songs, you feel like an intruder trying to sing them, but this one felt like my own.” Clearly want to respect the original art and artist, I think she and Jamie Hince have done a good job in reinterpreting it as a song that can be viewed equally as a song of freedom and as one of rebellion. Watch the riveting video for The Kills’ version of ‘List of Demands (Repatriations)’ below. For our past coverage on The Kills, go here.
