(SXSW 2015 flavoured!) Quickfire Questions #91: The Gooch Palms

Less than a week now before the music portion of SXSW 2015! But just as we did for SXSW 2014 last year, we’ll be running a special version of the TGTF Quickfire Questions, served up SXSW style with an extra couple of questions to get inside bands’ and artists’ heads so they’ll tell us what they really think of the event.

We’re now at #12 of these, and today we’ve got two of the wildest people coming out of Newcastle (that’s Newcastle, Australia, not Newcastle, England) to play for us in Austin, Leroy and Kat of the Gooch Palms, who were included in part 1 of our Australian artists performing at SXSW roundup. As proper Aussies, they’ll be bringing a food staple from down under in their cases, plus they tell us about how Kris Kross and Bryan Adams provided some comic relief in their young lives.

What are you most looking forward to doing while you’re in Austin?
We’ve never been to Austin, so we’re excited about being in town for the week. Everyone always says how great it is so we’re really just looking forward to hanging out and playing our shows.

Of the bands who have already been announced, do you have any that are must-sees on your schedule? If yes, who are they and why?
We’d love to see The Zombies. We’re big fans and would love to catch them while we’re in town.

Name something you’re packing in your suitcase that we might find unusual. (You are welcome to elaborate.)
Vegemite. We have 3 travel tubes of the stuff, kinda like toothpaste tubes but full of that awesome black goodness! Aussies can’t handle being away from vegemite for too long.

If we happen to run into you in a bar, we’d like to buy you a drink. What is your tipple of choice?
Jameson on the rocks. For our vocal chords of course 😉

What have you heard about the festival? Are you excited / anxious / scared / etc. and why?
We haven’t really heard that much about it. Being from Australia we don’t personally know many people that have played it before but we’re really looking forward to it. We love playing so we’ll just do our thang and hopefully people dig it!

Now on to our usual list of Quickfire Questions:

What song is your earliest musical memory?
Leroy: Wanting to dress like Kris Kross. I thought they were really cool so I wore all my clothes backwards for a weekend until I couldn’t handle everyone laughing at me anymore.
Kat: Sitting in my baby seat in the car and singing along to the radio at around 2 years of age. I thought the people in the passing cars would think I was a grown up because I was up high up in my seat and was singing loudly!

What was your favourite song as a child?
Leroy: ‘500 Miles’ – The Proclaimers.
Kat: ‘Psycho Killer’ – Talking Heads.

What song makes you laugh?
Leroy: ‘Another One Rides The Bus’ – Weird Al Yankovic.
Kat: ‘Motherlover’ – Lonely Island (feat. Justin Timberlake).

What song makes you cry?
Leroy: We’re too tough to cry.
Kat: Agreed.

What song reminds you of the first time you fell in love? (It’s up to you if you want this to be sweet, naughty, etc.)
Leroy: ‘Fuck Yeah’ – SPOD. I remember bonding with Kat over this song when we first started dating up at her house.
Kat: Radiohead were playing at a party when I first met my first love, so anything by Radiohead reminds me of that time. Sorry Leroy!!! Haha. He hates Radiohead too.

What song makes you think of being upset / angry? (Example: maybe you heard it when you were angry with someone and it’s still with you, and/or something that calms you down when you’re upset, etc.)
Leroy: ‘Sure Know Something’ – KISS. I always put KISS on if I need to unwind after a rough day.
Kat: ‘Everything I Do’ – Bryan Adams. Me and my ex were having a huge fight (probably right before we broke up) and he screamed “everything I do, I do it for you”. I just started laughing and when he realized what he’d said he started laughing too and the fight was instantly over.

Which song (any song written in the last century / 100 years or so) do you wish you’d written yourself?
Leroy: ‘Crying’ – Roy Orbison.
Kat: ‘Purple Rain’ – Prince.

Who is your favourite writer? (This can be a songwriter or ANY kind of writer.)
Leroy: Dee Dee Ramone (song writer).
Kat: I’ll say Dee Dee Ramone too. WE LOVE THE RAMONES!!!

If you hadn’t become a singer/musician/songwriter/etc., what job do you think you’d be doing right now?
Leroy: Probably digging a ditch somewhere.
Kat: I’d be an unfulfilled graphic designer.

If God said you were allowed to bring only one album with you to Heaven, which would it be and why? (Sorry, but double albums do not count.)
We’re not religious but we both thought the idea of heaven was that you can do anything you like all the time! So we can’t imagine God saying you could only bring ONE album!!!! Not cool, God. But if we could only listen to one album for eternity we would choose…
Leroy: KISS – ‘Destroyer’.
Kat: I can’t choose. I get bored too easy. Can I bring a radio instead?

Thanks to Leroy and Kat for being such cool cats and answering our questions, and cheers to Brid for sorting this out for us. If you’re in Austin, catch the band at the Aussie BBQ on Friday the 20th of March at 1:30 at the West Tent in Brush Square Park, among other appearances during the week.
