(SXSW 2015 flavoured!) Quickfire Questions #85: Logan Kroeber of The Dodos

Not long now before SXSW 2015! But just as we did for SXSW 2014 last year, we’ll be running a special version of the TGTF Quickfire Questions, served up SXSW style with an extra couple of questions to get inside bands’ and artists’ heads so they’ll tell us what they really think of the event.

We’re at installment number six, and this time we’re quizzing drummer Logan Kroeber of San Francisco alt rockers the Dodos, who released their sixth album ‘Individ’ in January. Carrie also caught them live in Tucson last week. The duo are relative veterans to the indie scene, so it makes sense that Kroeber has sound advice for those coming to Austin for the first time, and he also appears to have a thing about Swiss musician and producer DJ Bobo

What are you most looking forward to doing while you’re in Austin?
I just found out there are some old friends living there, so catching up with them and eating some good food. If it’s hot going swimming too!

Of the bands who have already been announced, do you have any that are must-sees on your schedule? If yes, who are they and why?
There’s too many to choose from. I just hope I get to see some good rap and I’ll probably spend some time at the Thrasher Death Match.

Name something you’re packing in your suitcase that we might find unusual. (You are welcome to elaborate.)
I’ve got nothing weird in my bag except more clothes than most, because doing laundry on tour can be a nightmare and I wanna keep it to a minimum.

If we happen to run into you in a bar, we’d like to buy you a drink. What is your tipple of choice?
A cold beer or a Hennessy on the rocks if you’re feeling really generous.

What advice would you give other bands who have never played at SXSW before?
Be nice to the locals and be prepared to suffer. Drink water.

Now on to our usual list of Quickfire Questions:

What song is your earliest musical memory?
Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’ played on a plastic recorder. The California Raisins.

What was your favourite song as a child?
‘We Close Our Eyes’ by Oingo Boingo.

What song makes you laugh?
DJ Bobo, ‘Vampires Are Alive’.

What song makes you cry?
DJ Bobo, ‘Vampires Are Alive’.

What song reminds you of the first time you fell in love? (It’s up to you if you want this to be sweet, naughty, etc.)
Rose Royce, ‘I Wanna Get Next To You’.

What song makes you think of being upset / angry? (Example: maybe you heard it when you were angry with someone and it’s still with you, and/or something that calms you down when you’re upset, etc.)
DJ Bobo, ‘Circus’. [I’ve never heard of this DJ Bobo character, and now I’m curious… -Ed.]

Which song (any song written in the last century / 100 years or so) do you wish you’d written yourself?
‘I Believe I Can Fly’ by R. Kelly.

Who is your favourite writer? (This can be a songwriter or ANY kind of writer.)
Devin the Dude.

If you hadn’t become a singer/musician/songwriter/etc., what job do you think you’d be doing right now?
Subsistence fisherman.

If God said you were allowed to bring only one album with you to Heaven, which would it be and why? (Sorry, but double albums do not count.)
Slayer, ‘Seasons in the Abyss’, because I bet he’s curious how the other half lives.

Thank you Logan for your answers and Brendan for sorting this out for us!
