Editor’s note: do not adjust your screen. Yes, we’re airing some of our (and some of your!) favourite song guilty pleasures in video form this Jubilee weekend. The bands were featuring are largely not the kind we write about here on TGTF, but we wanted to do something new and cool over this 4-day weekend. Come along for the crazy ride and enjoy.

American band Extreme‘s only #1 Billboard was suggested by Gateshead writer Martin. It’s pretty ironic that this band, who is known more for their heavy metal ways, became famous off the back of a MOR classic.

My cousin calls it one of the easiest songs to learn on guitar ever, because there are only a couple chords, it’s a ballad (so therefore it’s slow) and the chords just keep repeating and repeating. However you slice it, it’s a great example of minimalist melody and true evocative lyrics. And I’m sure it was the soundtrack to quite a few ‘firsts’ in the early ’90s. (Not judging anyone. At all.)

We love music that has its heart on its sleeve, tells a story, swims around our head all day or makes us dance like no-one's watching.

TGTF is edited by Mary Chang, who is based in Washington, DC. She is joined by writers in England, America and Ireland. It began as a UK music blog by Phil Singer in 2005.

All MP3s are posted with the permission of the artists or their representatives and are for sampling only. Like the music? Buy it. If you want a track removed, email us and we'll sort it ASAP.
