Single Review: The Kooks – The Saboteur

Brighton’s Kooks have not released an album in 3 years (their last being 2008′s #1 charting ‘Konk’). But just last week, Luke Pritchard appeared on Zane Lowe’s Radio1 evening programme to talk a bit about being away from the music scene for so long and to present what the band is offering up ‘The Saboteur’ as a preview to the new album, ‘Junk of the Heart’.
I don’t really know much about the Kooks, so I’m looking at this new song from the point of view from a complete newbie. Hmmm. The slowed down bits remind me of late era Beatles and Queen. There seems to be a space-age quality to the vocals and random bleepy effects in the background. “I am the saboteur / and I will let you into my world”….um…what? I’m not really sure this is a world I want to be let into. It’s a bit sleazy? Is this the way music is going these days? I’d take cheesy over sleazy any day.
Overall, I’m not terribly impressed. Especially in light of the Darkness making a comeback this year. I welcome the Kooks to surprise me with the full album.
7/10
