Just ahead of his band’s appearance as the headliner of TGTF’s stage at the Great Escape on Saturday at Brighton Coalition, singer / bassist Steve Terebecki of White Denim answers our Quickfire Questions tells us why music these days gives him an extreme reaction and what sordid vocations he might be involved with if it weren’t for music.

Be sure to catch White Denim playing the TGTF stage at Coalition Saturday night; their set time is 9:45 PM.

1. What song is your earliest musical memory?
‘The Simple Song’ on the Residents‘ ‘Commercial Album’. My dad always played that one for me.

2. What was your favourite song as a child?
Probably “Oh Yeah” by Yello…but we’re talkin’ super small child.

3. What song makes you laugh?

Any song by R. Kelly.

4. What song makes you cry?
Badfinger -‘Day After Day’…but really, half of Badfinger’s catalogue. Why did TWO members have to hang themselves???

5. What song reminds you of the first time you fell in love? (It’s up to you if you want this to be sweet, naughty, etc.)
The first time I thought I was in love I think Bone Thugs ‘n’ Harmony was on, ‘Crossroads’.

6. What song makes you think of being upset / angry? (Example: maybe you heard it when you were angry with someone and it’s still with you, and/or something that calms you down when you’re upset, etc.)
Most songs by current bands. It’s because I physically get upset/angry when I hear it and then I think, “Why am I upset/angry? Oh yeah, because this sucks!”

7. Which song (any song written in the last century) do you wish you’d written yourself?
Only in the last century…hmmm…I wish I wrote ‘Beat It’.

8. Who is your favourite writer? (This can be a songwriter or ANY kind of writer.)
I really love Andy Partridge and Robyn Hitchcock.

9. If you hadn’t become a singer/musician/songwriter/etc., what job do you think you’d be doing right now?

I would definitely sell drugs or be a gigolo.

10. If God said you were allowed to bring only one album with you to Heaven, which would it be and why? XTC – ‘Black Sea’. It’s got a little bit of everything on it.
