Single Review: Two Wounded Birds – All We Wanna Do / Midnight Wave

Two Wounded Birds is yet another sunny, surfy sounding band. But shockingly (and unlike the Drums, Best Coast, Princeton, etc. etc. etc.), they’re not from America, they’re from Margate. Considering Margate is a seaside town, they probably have more cred to be doing this kind of music than anyone else in Britain.
They’re releasing a double-A sided single in mid-April, and these two tracks couldn’t be any more different. ‘All We Wanna Do’ is a happy-go-lucky track that makes you easily understand why the band released their debut EP on the Drums’ guitarist Jacob Graham’s Holiday Records and also toured with the ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ boys. As fun as a beach barbecue, it’s cheery and sun-dappled (watch the video below, filmed in Margate in what appears to be a completely DIY way). ‘Midnight Wave’, on the other hand lays into you. Like a hopped up version of the Surfaris’ Wipeout on speed, the other side of this single is just a continuous assault on your ears with severe guitars and drums. It’s almost as if the words are completely unnecessary. Neither of these tracks make the 2-minute mark, so they’ve definitely met the goal of 1) being radio-friendly and 2) not outstaying their welcome.
So far, so good.
The ‘All We Wanna Do/Midnight Wave’ single is scheduled to be released on limited edition 7″ vinyl and digital download on 18 April via Moshi Moshi Records.
