J-Dilla Changed My Life Charity Gigs / February 2011

Not being much of a hip hop aficionado, I’m not up to speed with most of that genre’s producers. Last summer when I saw Holy Ghost gig at U Street Music Hall in DC, I noticed drummer Nick Millhiser sporting a t-shirt with an unusual motto: “J-Dilla Saved My Life”. Unsure of who or what J-Dilla was, I did my research. If you don’t know who he is, you have at least for sure heard the artists he worked with in his all too short life: Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, the Pharcyde and Erykah Badu, just to name a few.

Sadly, J-Dilla (birth name James Dewitt Yancey) passed away at age 32 in 2006 from lupus-related complications. After his death, his mother Maureen set up the J-Dilla Foundation in his memory, pledging ‘”to help fund inner-city music programs, and provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula”. In these days of the credit crunch and school budgets being slashed, there’s no time like the present where a charity such as this would really benefit.

The all-star exclusive J-Dilla related sets that are set to take place in Manchester on the 4th, London on the 5th, and Brighton on the 6th of February cost only £5 as a minimum donation. But all the proceeds through tickets, donations, and the sales of exclusive t-shirts of the event will go to the J-Dilla Foundation and Lupus UK, the only national registered charity supporting people with the disease. So come out for an amazing night of music and support these very worthy charities. For more information on the events, who’s spinning and how to buy tickets, go here.

Friday 4th February 2011 – Manchester Deaf Institute
Saturday 5th February 2011 – London Scala
Sunday 6th February 2011 – Brighton Jam
