10 for 2011 Interview: Bird Eats Baby

We has some questions for the Brighton band who placed second in the 10 for 2011 poll this year. Read on and find out why they consider themselves “the marmite of bands”…
Congratulations Birdeatsbaby on finishing #2 in our 10 of 2011 poll of bands to watch next year. Unfortunately, we don’t have a trophy or anything to give you, but please know that it was the faithful readers of TGTF that voted to give you your place on this list. Tell us a little about yourselves – how long have you been together, how you guys got together as a band?
We sort of stumbled across each other at Brighton Uni and realized we all shared similar music tastes…and a mutual hatred for ‘trendy’ music. We have never been cool…
I was having a lot of trouble describing your music. On your Web site, you describe your sound as ‘alt-classical-prog-punks’, which is pretty eclectic! How did you arrive at the Bird Eats Baby sound?
Seeing us half of us were classically trained and half from punk rock background (and Garry’s the progger), it sort of happened by a happy accident! We managed to fuse all our various influences together… but now we have such trouble describing it – there is no genre we really fit into which can make things a little difficult!
Do you find winning over crowds difficult with your rather unconventional crowd, or not? What makes for a good gig in your mind?
We tend to divide the audience. We’re the marmite of bands. A good gig consists of plenty of booze, a rowdy audience and a fully-functioning bass player…
What singers and/or bands do you consider your greatest influences?
Matt Bellamy. Nick Cave. Freddie Mercury.
You are based in Brighton. Are you all originally from the area? Do you find inspiration from being located at a major tourist city of England?
None of us are from here! We, like most Brightonians, came here to study and never left. It’s a haven for musicians and artist types. And the pubs are great.
Tell us about your 2010. What was the best moment of the year for you as a band? What moment would you like to forget?
Being interviewed on 6music was pretty amazing, also our last show of Europe in Paris was spectacularly fun! We’d like to forget Garry’s particularly accurate and creepy impression of Paul Daniels…
What’s something about your band that most people do not know or would not guess?
We listen to ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen on the way back from every show, singing drunkenly. We have no shame.
Name something you’d like to do in 2011 that you have never done before.
Play America…oh look, we ARE playing America! Yay! Apart from that we’d LOVE to play Glastonbury. Hint hint.
