Single Review: City Reign – Making Plans

We get a lot of music submissions. When I popped over to City Reign‘s MySpace to have a listen, the first thing that struck me the first thing that struck me about the page was the great affection the band must have for their instruments, because next to each member’s name and photo is a description of what they each play. (Since starting up with bass guitar a couple weeks ago, I have become increasingly geeky about axes.) As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and after I pressed play, I was impressed with what I heard. Maybe I’m being sentimental, but right now my brain is fixated on the ‘return’ of the Libertines at Reading/Leeds over the weekend, so a band churning out good time rock ‘n’ roll is what I’m looking for these days.

This band is a prime example that except for the people arguing over whose footy squad is better, Man City or Arsenal (insert your favourite teams here), the North and South can play nice together. Chris Bull (lead vocals / guitar) and Michael Grice (guitar) are from London but packed up for Manchester when their previous band broke up. They soon picked up Sam Jones (drums) and convinced Michael Glaze to buy a used bass off eBay and join them.

Interestingly, City Reign formed upon meeting at a Ryan Adams gig (hence the name: it’s a homophone play on words from Adams’s song ‘City Rain, City Streets’), but I am relieved to report they don’t sound like Adams. From my impression anyway, because I’m not a fan of Adams’s music. Their debut single, ‘Making Plans’, couldn’t be a better slice of English city life if it tried. Rain, traffic, traffic lights and the roads that lead to London…it all makes for something very atmospheric. It’s all making me a little ‘homesick’ to be honest! You can watch the promo video for the song at the end of this post. (Okay, not going to lie, I’m disappointed the band aren’t actually in the video.)

The b-side is called ‘Sleep Easy’. When I first gave this a spin, it brought me back to the Bad Lieutenant set at Roskilde last month. I’m really digging the wistful lyrics, powerful guitars and pounding drums.

7.5/10

According to City Reign’s blog, they managed to sell 100 pre-order copies of the single in a mere week from the time they’d announced there was even a pre-order, so either they have very loyal fans or people out there liking what they hear on their MySpace. Or possibly both, which is my best guess. I’m going to keep an eye on these guys. They’ll be playing a few dates in the coming weeks too, which I’ve listed below.

Wednesday 22nd September 2010 – Manchester Moho Live (supporting I Am Arrows)
Friday 24th September 2010 – London New Cross Inn
Monday 27th September 2010 – Fallowfield Ram and Shackle (single release party)
Friday 15th October 2010 – Manchester Retro Bar
Saturday 4th December 2010 – Manchester Roadhouse

As fine a piece of straight ahead rock’n’roll as I’ve heard in a long time. Go out and buy!
