Single Review: The Offspring – You’re Gonna Go Far Kid

Last year was subject to the release of The Offspring making their return with another album “Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace” which wasn’t a classic from the Californian rockers but, in my view, it never got the credit it deserved. Yes, it may not have been as good as previous records but that would be one hard act to follow.
One song however, was far from a dissapointment and shows the band at their best. “You’re Gonna Go Far Kid” has everything you want from an Offspring track. Fast paced guitar and drum exchanges, big catchy vocals and a solid bass holding everything together is all part of the make-up to the track.
The only disappointment is that the tune never got to the top 10 of the charts which seems absurd when you listen to the track. Publicity, I would like to think, was the reason for the poor reception but I’m sure that perhaps a re-release in a few months would get the credit it deserves.
The track is similar to “Hammerhead” which also features on the new album but it’s just not as good, despite being one of the better tunes from the record, it lacks the refined and tight sound that You’re Gonna Go Far Kid displays. Unlike other bands, that take a bit of a break in between albums, The Offspring haven’t changed at all with the same quality and ability to punch out a massive hit single like four or five years ago.
